Gel blasters to be defined as firearms in South Australia from tomorrow
South Australia is cracking down on imitation guns known as "gel blasters", declaring the toys to be defined as firearms from tomorrow. Gel blasters are hyper-realistic toys that use a battery or a spring to fire a gel ball made up primarily of water. From tomorrow, people who own a gel blaster in the state of South Australia will have two options: register the blaster and obtain a firearms licence within six months or surrender the blaster as part of a firearms amnesty.
People complain that they are actually dangerous. Eh. I'm not buying that. Worse than lasers shined in the eyes of pilots? Worse than pepper spray? Worse than a baseball bat over the head? Nope! Well, maybe they are more dangerous than a boomerang, since those are as much of a danger to the thrower! (Hey, this is Australia!)
People complain that they can easily be made to look exactly like a "real" firearm and then used in crimes. I could see that as an issue. Fake police badges that are made to look as realistic as possible are theoretically illegal and should be. Lights and siren on your car designed to look just like police setup is illegal and should be. Relax fellow air travelers ... I'm Clock Boy™ and I made this thing at home to only look like a bomb; it's really just an perfectly functioning off-the-shelf alarm clock that I partially dismantled! Etc. So maybe the manufacturers could at least take extra steps so that the toys can't be easily modified to look like the real thing. On the flip side ... if people have these and actually get shot by police, I'm really not feeling very sorry for them.
