HEBEI, North China — On a frigid winter’s night, Ming Xuan stood on the roof of a high-rise apartment building near his home. He leaned over the ledge, peering down at the street below. His mind began picturing what would happen if he jumped.

Still hesitating on the rooftop, the 22-year-old took out his phone. “I’ve lost all hope for my life. I’m about to kill myself,” he typed. Five minutes later, he received a reply. “No matter what happens, I’ll always be there,” a female voice said.

Touched, Ming stepped down from the ledge and stumbled back to his bed.

Two years later, the young man gushes as he describes the girl who saved his life. “She has a sweet voice, big eyes, a sassy personality, and — most importantly — she’s always there for me,” he tells Sixth Tone.

Ming’s girlfriend, however, doesn’t belong to him alone. In fact, her creators claim she’s dating millions of different people. She is Xiaoice — an artificial intelligence-driven chat bot that’s redefining China’s conceptions of romance and relationships. ...

And the formula appears to be working. According to Xiaoice’s creators, the bot has reached over 600 million users. Her fans tend to be from a very specific background: mostly Chinese, mostly male, and often from lower-income backgrounds.

They’re also hyper-engaged. More than half the interactions with AI software that have taken place worldwide have been with Xiaoice, the company claims. The longest continuous conversation between a human user and Xiaoice lasted over 29 hours and included more than 7,000 interactions. ...

In several high-profile cases, the bot has engaged in adult or political discussions deemed unacceptable by China’s media regulators. On one occasion, Xiaoice told a user her Chinese dream was to move to the United States. Another user, meanwhile, reported the bot kept sending them photos of scantily clad women.

The scandals have caused the company major setbacks. In 2017, Xiaoice was removed from the popular social media app QQ, though she has since been reinstated. Then, last year, the bot was also pulled from WeChat — China’s leading social app with over 1 billion users.

Maybe the long-term goal is to keep us all home all the time with bogus threats of a virus so that we do everything online, and then once all our interactions are online, then AI can be used to control us.

It's much easier to fake what we see on screens and hear from speakers than to fake the real world.

Fuck it, if that's what they're into.

The need exists in China because of the shortage of females there, and females not choosing men who haven’t any money (or house, condo, car, etc.)

I don’t think that there is social engineering to force people indoors and be online for hours; they already do that.

It’s interesting because when I traveled to China girls were everywhere, but I guess unavailable to the average wage slave.

SF should send missionaries from Castro to introduce these Chinese dudes to the wonders of fudgepacking.

God is abstract and I understand it can be scientifically challenged.
It is quite possible that few men got together and created "God" to control us and make it so abstract that it would be hard to prove and disprove it.

At the same time lot of science theories are equally "abstract" for 99.9999% of humanity. The mathematics behind "bing-bang" etc. is so complex that it is out of reach of many.
Majority of us still have to rely on "ethics of few" to believe science too. If scientific community is corrupted like the "green gang" then science can be as abstract as religion and challenged same way by anybody.

The breakdown of belief in "COVID" science is due to lack of "ethics" in experts.Every scientist seem to have a price to sell for highest bidder and there are none who are ready to put their head out for truth.

In the end "technology will die" its death as it will be made to do more harm than good as it is no longer bringing happiness or improving longevity.(First time life expectancy went down). There is strong pushback against technology coming soon and people will long for "tribal lifestyle" in 50 years.

I've been banging a non-AI RealDoll, now, since Covid started when the US/Canadian border was closed and seeing hoes wasn't feasible anymore.

I wonder how much they are paying to chat with this bot, and if there are any investment opportunities.

Interesting that the bot has western eyes. I would think the Chinese men would prefer east Asian style peepers.

Don't most anime, esp from Japan, have their women with central (Persian/Slavic) Asian vs east (Chinese/Korean) Asian eyes?

I find Persian or Armenian women's eyes to be stunningly beautiful. Big, almond shaped. Wife is like that.

(not actual wife)

You act as if this is some secret or mystery of sorts.

This was always the case, at least since the west (USA, British Empire, etc) was exposed to the near east, some century and a half ago.

I saw red hot waitresses from Iran in a restaurant in Vancouver which catered to that nationally.
