#teslamodelX This afternoon I shall accept delivery of a 2021 Tesla Model X SUV. My old car has been with me for 16 years. Elena wanted a vehicle that we can use for long road trips. She wanted a plug-in hybrid. I countered that I wanted to get away from fossil fuels. She agreed. She specified that we had to find an electric vehicle with a 400-mile range. The Tesla comes in at 371 miles range. We will be able to travel in comfort as will the dogs. This vehicle goes 0-60 miles per hour in 4 seconds. Its top speed is 155 miles per hour. It is a very advanced computer on wheels.

This brings to mind a time almost 100 years ago-the wild 1920's. In Britain and the US, if you had the money, you bought a touring car. It had a V-12 engine. It was a convertible with three rows of seats that allowed an entire family to travel. Gasoline stations were few and far between. One had to have a large fuel tank. Roads ranged from bad to horrible. The vehicle had to be tough. You needed a large trunk to hold all the family's luggage.

My grandfather was part of this travel revolution. He owned several road houses in Kentucky and Ohio. After a long day of travel over jarring roads, you came to one of his hotels. You were given a clean and nice room for the night. A home-cooked meal was provided in the dining room. Alcohol was prohibited by law. Nonetheless, a tired traveler could enjoy a selection of wines, beers, whiskeys, and his special 186-proof moonshine that he prepared on his own still. A lonely male traveler could have a beautiful woman keep him company for the night. Everything was done with style and grace without being pretentious. It is predicted that after the pandemic ends, we will have "The Roaring Twenties" again with economic prosperity and lots of fun. I hope so.

Enjoy the new car depreciation!

I’m more interested in what old car you are replacing.

Good on you. I don't mind new car purchases so much if you've been frugal in the past. Owning a car for 16 years is awesome. Otherwise, new car purchases are an awful idea as BA mentions.

Housing excluded, you only live once, so you should treat yourself every once in a while. But don't go crazy. Nice things have a way of scratching an itch and it can go downhill quickly. Hope you enjoy it though.

My 25 year old beater dies in May, leaving me with just my good car. Had to drive it in snow and ice due to recent storm. Actually wondering if I should buy a beater to replace it.

Used cars prices went up a lot recently. I would wait until they drop back to normal.

I have a Volvo S60 assembled in Belgium, the engine in Sweden.
It’s got 60,000 miles on it, so I will probably have it for 15 years. It’s as solid as a tank but goes like a bat out of hell.
My next car will be a Chevy Bolt or similar if I am still driving around by then.
I previously owned Toyota trucks, which are awesome vehicles. I sold my last one with 285,000 miles on it and still going strong.
The Toyota Celica has the truck engine, I don’t know if they are still made. These will run forever.

Argues in front of a judge that he's destitute in order to shirk his responsibility to repay debt. Buys an uber-luxury $130K vehicle several years later.

I'm okay with treating yourself once in a while. Forgot about that story though. It theoretically is okay to not repay debts, but don't go out and take on more once the slate is clean. I've been paid off 6-7 years now on a 2009. I'm not a car guy though and don't have customers/client in my car ever. Cars ain't my jam.

I like travel. That's where we like to splurge on ourselves. Experiences are better than things or keeping up with the Jones', but for some people things are more important. Unfortunately things get you into more trouble financially from what I've seen.

I do hold out hope for stuff like this, but realize that when your system "freezes"(!) at 228°C, you've got a hard problem to solve.

Didn't one of these things located near Vegas go tits up a couple of years ago?

I think it can be a good niche solution for certain climates and applications, but not something that can universally be pushed on everyone as a matter of State policy.

Interesting - I did not know they use KNO3 and NaNO3 as heat carriers! Those are quite good oxidizers that were used in black powder, decompose at ca. 600C to Na/KNO2 which are demonstrably carcinogenic, and in general are quite dangerous at high temperatures.

Yikes! Heat it up, but not too hot. I'm going back to building a flywheel in my basement (if the house starts vibrating, everybody out!)

House might lift into stratosphere as KNO3 + sugar is DIY rocket fuel :)

20   SunnyvaleCA   2020 Dec 18, 1:51am

Congratulations ohomen171! Pay no attention to the haters. If I were shopping for a non-stick-shift vehicle, it would probably be electric or a hybrid.

I think that people with a house (where they can charge overnight) and with a 2-car need (married, for example) should consider an electric for their second car. A 100 mile range is probably plenty for a second car. It's amazing how people twist their brains into pretzels to claim that an electric couldn't possibly work as a second vehicle. Lots of that pretzel logic above.

That's a good point. Various governments and individual virtue signalers are jumping the gun with mandating and demanding electrics. I take a more realistic approach ... maybe we could get 20% of US citizens to go electric in the next 10 years. That's realistic and could help diversify transportation energy. People complain about solar and wind power failing at night ... great, charge all those new cars during the day (maybe even at work).

Or just let the market work. Even a 20% mandate over 10 years may not be realistic. The problem is needs and use. Especially in rural areas where EV's are generally not practical. Then there's the engineering factor that cannot be ignored in conjunction with the needs and use. Fact is if you have a family of 4+, most available EV's are not going to work out. You need SUV's or minivans (ewww) with 3rd row seating or storage. What kind of milage would that get?

Then there's towing. The capacity isn't there for that. I help friends and family with their lawns when their shit breaks because I've got a trailer and a zero turn mower. I have a camper that is 2,200lbs empty. As a 2 vehicle family already, an EV isn't practical because of what I just mention.

While I like EV's on paper, they're just not practical for many people. It would be like people getting sports cars as a 3rd car back in the day that they drove occasionally on weekends. I would be that user, but I'm not sinking cash into a 3rd joy ride car. And I'll admit EV's are fun to drive. They're just still not that practical for a huge chunk of the population.
23   BayArea   2020 Dec 18, 4:20am

I believe in EVs but I have small kids and cannot sit around charging stations while they are screaming their head off on road trips.

And the anxiety of getting to those stations, forget about it.

EV's are intended to be commuter cars, not to be used for long trips. Rent a regular gas powered car for that if your only car is an EV/.

Mostly the same range that you will get when you use the A/C, since it uses a heat pump. Now if it's too cold for the heat pump to be effective, than yeah your commute needs to be short enough.

EV's are for families or people with multiple cars, with the EV being the commuter car. And yes the person needs to be living most likely in a house since few apartments will have chargers. So no to apartment dwellers, and probably no EV's in particularly cold climates.

Edmunds Dubs Ford Mach-E "Best Luxury EV" And "Vastly Superior" To Tesla Model Y

It has been just weeks since Consumer Reports said that Tesla's Model Y has "well below average reliability”. Now, in a glowing review of Ford's electric Mustang, Edmunds is taking their own shots at Tesla.

In a review and a series of Tweets that were posted this week, Edmunds starts by saying "The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E may not be the fastest or most affordable electric vehicle out there, nor does it have the most range" before noting "It is, however, what Edmunds considers the best in the luxury EV class."

Dropping to 50% of range with heater on at 72F and with one person.
I have 8 month of old with 8K+ miles on my 75D and this is my model x first winter experince, my miles range is dropping 50% with heater on even with one person in car, I have been experiencing this issue for last 4 weeks, did anybody experiencing same with Model X or it is a known issue?
Thanks for your suggestions and advises..
BTW...they use a 4000 watt resistance heater, not a heatpump

Good for them, but CR kinda has a history of declaring anything new "the best" and revising it later. As for reliability it remains to be seen where the new Fat Stang lands on the chart after a year or two.
And fucking Ford could've built it in the USA like Tesla does instead of outsorcing all these jobs to Mexico.

Can confirm, I work on these for a living. I've seen S60s with over 300,000 miles on the engine still going strong. It will probably have needed a transmission by then. These cars DRINK oil, make sure you check the level regularly on the dipstick; don't wait for the red light on the dash to tell you it's now completely out and suffering damage already.
