Google threatened to disable its search engine in Australia if it’s forced to pay local publishers for news, a dramatic escalation of a months-long standoff with the government.

A proposed law, intended to compensate publishers for the value their stories generate for the company, is “unworkable,” Mel Silva, managing director for Australia and New Zealand, told a parliamentary hearing Friday. She specifically opposed the requirement that Google pay media companies for displaying snippets of articles in search results.

Who the fuck they think they are? No, seriosly, if Google fucking disappeared tomorrow, would you really notice?

Best thing for Aussies would be a loss of Google influence.

Oh noes! Google might stop spying on an entire nation's citizens and will stop promoting state sponsored propaganda!

That's an idea... I could make a tool that could selectively disable entire corporations. Like Google, Facebook, etc. I do this myself through my /etc/hosts file on my linux box.

I can access Google ONLY through Brave doing a tor connection.

Woah, that's not a threat, that's promise of a massive gift to the public.

Do it Australia! Force payment of local publishers for news. It would be the best thing to come out of Australia since Vegemite.

At this point with rank manipulation and censorship, Excite and Aji were probably better, from the mid late 90's, the same time Yahoo and Google were just starting.

Yeah, it reeks of reverse psychology: "Go ahead, do it, make us lose a market of 25M users and see what happens! We triple-dog-dare you, Australia!"

I’d take them up on it.

Liar.

I've tasted it. It like taking a dog turd and spreading it very thinly over a piece of toast. I can see it as a flavoring, but you sure can't make a goddamned sandwich out of it and for certain it's an acquired taste - not one worth having in my opinion.

These tech companies are funny, they want to operate on their own terms and ignore local laws. They act like they are above the law. I think the time has come to break them up and definitely not allow them to acquire a competitor ever again.

Won't Duck-Duck-Go still work even if Google doesn't?

Sso who cares if Australia is Google-Free?

Yandex, Bing, DDG, Yahoo... it's not like Aussies won't have a choice.

I have a big jar from when I used to work for an Australian company. It's basically straight MSG.

I can't eat it in the evening or it will give me insomnia. Aside from that, I like it.

They determine what most people can and cannot see, so how can you get mass support for breaking them up?

They won't show that support, exactly like the are suppressing all talk about the fraudulent election.
