For many years it seemed that overpopulation was the looming crisis of our age. Back in 1968, the Stanford biologists Paul and Anne Ehrlich infamously predicted that millions would soon starve to death in their bestselling, doom-saying book The Population Bomb; since then, neo-Malthusian rumblings of imminent disaster have been a continual refrain in certain sections of the environmental movement – fears that were recently given voice on David Attenborough’s documentary Life on our Planet.

At the time the Ehrlichs were publishing their dark prophecies, the world was at its peak of population growth, which at that point was increasing at a rate of 2.1% a year. Since then, the global population has ballooned from 3.5 billion to 7.67 billion.

But growth has slowed – and considerably. As women’s empowerment advances, and access to contraception improves, birthrates around the world are stuttering and stalling, and in many countries now there are fewer than 2.1 children per woman – the minimum level required to maintain a stable population. ...

Increasingly this is also the case in middle-income countries too, including Thailand and Brazil. In Iran, a birthrate of 1.7 children per woman has alarmed the government; it recently announced that state clinics would no longer hand out contraceptives or offer vasectomies.

Thanks to this worldwide pattern of falling fertility levels, the UN now believes that we will see an end to population growth within decades – before the slide begins in earnest.

Just like bad money chases out good money so shall the bad people chase out the good. How? The least responsible of humans are the ones having all the babies.

Idiocracy is a thing.

Based people have kids. The frugal, hardworking kind who produce the geniuses. The Microwave was invented by some dude from a tiny Maine town of militant Calvinists, I think the population was 500 and now is 300.

Isn't it WONDERFUL that Unitarians, Atheists, Reform Secular Jews, etc. have so few kids? In 20 years there won't be enough wokey teachers and admins to replace the current ones, they'll have to hire based people. And real estate prices will collapse.

What the hell do you mean "are going to"....its already happend, it's precisely why we have communism knocking on the front door, negative births rate and the death of the west.

The only thing that will save the West is we all simultaneously covert to Islam, bitch slap all these feminist bitches back to the kitchen, put them under burqas, take away their right to vote, impregnate them and lock them down so they can't get abortions. Once we doubled the population, pull a "psych", revert back to christianity and live happily ever after. But never give women the right to vote again.

I have to agree.

Basically, the world is ending because women got the right to vote. Sorry, but it's true.
5   Dholliday126   2021 Jan 24, 1:57pm

Women are too emotional and have the wrong personality to vote. Women are nurturers so they want to take care of everyone and make everything OK, this leads to socialism and eventually communism. Not to mention most women cant balance a checkbook to save their life, so all voting based on economics goes out the window.

Esp. the last sentence and esp. American womyn - womyn now have the advantage in colleges/universities, more graduates, equal if not better job opportunities, and yet, most American womyn are broke (or worse in debt) at any stage in their life despite their large salaries due to excessive consumerism while you can find many men at the same age and stage in their lives who already have saved 10s if not 100s of thousands. In other cultures women run a very tight ship with their finances as it's a plus when being considering for marriage.

My wife is cheap. I always liked that about her.

The argument about women is statistically correct, because daughters in a prosperous society are by and large raised by spoiling parents. A lot of men too are gullible short time-preference "useful idiots" . . . because they too were raised by spoiling parents who failed to make kids understand the consequences of their actions.

Voting worked well when there was property requirement and there was little to no (subsidized) mortgage available, so price for homes were reasonable and people had to save up to buy their homes (i.e. having at least several years to a decade or longer experience of saving up enough to buy their homes, therefore proving long time-preference, and having a somewhat objective understanding of the consequences of their own actions).

Wait - does anyone think that Indoeuropean and African countries will just stop reproducing? Gimme a break.

Women are RESOURCE DISTRIBUTORS. This is even more true in the modern world vs. 100 years ago where a woman worked 12 hours a day to maintain a household of 4-6 people.

It also explains why Mothers of multiple children and married vote very differently than single mothers and single women who want resources distributed to them from Gov't Sugar Daddy. Most married women with children recognize the money is being distributed AWAY from them.

How is this bad again? The only areas with an average birthrate still over 2.1 are the poorest African & South Asian countries.

That's like saying fire trucks are bad because where they show up there is a fire.

The prosperous American cities have much higher population density than the poorest African and South Asian country side. Even in those "over-populated" countries, the cities with higher density have much higher population density than the less populated country side. The source of poverty in those poor African and South Asian countries is their society being run by over-educated bureaucrats manipulating their economies through government coercion, so the resulting economy lacks opportunity and vitality.

The declining birth rate in developed countries is likewise the result of rent-seeking by the monopolistic bureaucratic class whose brains are filled with sh*t and all too eager to run other people's lives. If there is any "over-population," it's the over-population of like-minded (therefore redundant) bureaucrats.

Ehrlich infamously predicted that millions would soon starve to death

Ehrlich was largely right.
Except he didn't anticipate the "Green Revolution", which took off about when his book came out, implementing petro-chemical fertilizers to dramatically increase yields, and coinciding with Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz's directing American farmers to “plant fence row to fence row”.
The result; food bereft of micronutrients grown in depleted soils which along with a massive shift to subsidized corn, released the scourge of endless tanker cars of high fructose syrup and lead to, instead of starvation, the high calorie malnutrition and diabesity epidemic of today.
Oh yeah McGoverns unscientific perversion of the “Food Pyramid” didn’t help either I reckon.
A least the is how I remember it. And I watched as America got fat as fuck.

Two paths to early death and I couldn’t say which was more miserable.

He should have. Agriculture has been increasing yields firmly and steadily for the two centuries prior to his book

He was also on the "Coming Ice Age" thing until the early 80s. From the 60s to late 70s he was on the "dry, cold wave reducing growing seasons and causing water crisis" bandwagon.

No he wasn't!

Life is simply a large chaotic existence. Ehrlich's predictions were garbage and didn't come to pass. He was wrong. Name one prediction he was correct in, and quote him.

Just another shyster in my opinion. I once listened to this charlatan, but unlike most people I readily accept when I was tricked and fooled. These people aren't sages, they don't have foresight, they are just propagandists.

It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled - not for me. I recognize my frailty. We've all been fooled and tricked, grow a pair and see it.

All around me are people who refuse to see it, they will recognize it when they are 80. I live among intellectual children who trust authorities over their own lying eyes and direct observation.
