It was chilly, and slightly embarrassing, and there were not many people out because it was a bit early for dinner, but I did it.

I guess the sign is kinda long, but I think there needs to be some kind of "authority" to quote. And if they say the NY Times is not a trustworthy source, all the better! I'll agree.

I'm going to be a regular in all the shopping districts. I think the worst that might happen is getting some kind of fine for not wearing a mask.

@patrick
Kudos, You do what you say and brave man.
2   rocketjoe79   2021 Feb 16, 5:11pm

Wait, Patrick - are you saying there is a city ordinance mandating outdoor masks?
3   Patrick   2021 Feb 16, 5:11pm

Thank you, thank you.

I'm definitely going to do it again and encourage others to do likewise.

Happy to hear advice on how to look less nutty. Maybe I should gather a group of people with similar signs.

Not just city, statewide:

Californians are now required to wear face coverings in most public spaces. On Nov. 16, 2020, the California Department of Public Health issued an updated order about the use of cloth face coverings or masks by the general public when outside the home.

Wearing face coverings helps reduce the spread of coronavirus especially when combined with physical distancing and frequent hand washing.

Wear a face covering at City Parks, playgrounds and public spaces

https://www.santaclaraca.gov/i-want-to/stay-informed/newsroom/coronavirus-updates/face-coverings

This is raw abuse of government power and should be strongly resisted by everyone.

I'd suggest putting a QR code on the sign next time that leads to a link that goes into details.

Thanks, good idea. I suppose I can use my printer for that.

You can see in the QR code I just added, it's a link to a tinyurl. You want the shortest text because it's easier to read the qr code.

Fuck that. You just made a vacation decision for me. Carolina's it is for the summer trip (maybe). I've been, but wife and kids haven't.

CA is fucked up and I will give them $0. I applaud you for your efforts, but do you ever feel like the ship has taken on too much water and there's only a few life boats left? I know you rent so you have flexibility and don't worry about property value. Is it just work at this point or family?

Covid tests are a pain, but I'll do them for travel INSIDE. I'm not going to wear a mask outdoors though. Ever. Or be shamed for it without fists being thrown.

So yeah, likely no Tahoe for this family. Idaho might be a 2nd option. Coeur d'alene is a cool area. Otherwise coastal Carolinas. Either way I know both those areas will give little shit about masks if at all.

You don't have enough to retire in Caligulan splendor???
11   Patrick   2021 Feb 16, 5:47pm

Well, watch SHOP tomorrow after they announce earnings.

Sign is too wordy. You need a shorter slogan in bigger letters with better contrast. That and you need to be with a group.

"MASKS ARE A SCAM"

Or

"FUCK NEWSOME"

The fine print can be on the bottom.

I agree with Booger, too cerebral. Most people are twitter idiots and can only read 6 or fewer words before their brains turn off.

I'm trying to get my wife to Sell high (now) and Buy Low (in a couple of years.) She fears getting kicked out of our rental property by a landlord. But we could literally make enough from the proceeds to rent for 8 years with ZERO investment growth. If invested and we make only 8% a year, we are renters forever!

What is my argument to convince her otherwise?
P.S. this is emotional - money arguments have little force here.

Any long term investment strategy based on a highly specific prediction of the future (unless you personally control that future) is probably not advisable. Just one of many details: taxes. Taxes change every year, and they change significantly at least every five years. Many long term real estate strategies and business strategies have gone bankrupt over tax changes alone that occurred while the investments were 'active'. And, of course, taxes are just one thing.

The future is much too gnarly and always too unpredictable to base an investment as important as your owned home.

Did you see this Ze there?

20   Tenpoundbass   2021 Feb 16, 7:42pm

Is it just me, or does Trump lawyer Michael van der Veen, have NPC eye brows?

And LOL on Google being so butt hurt, this guy is hidden when you Google "Trump's impeachment lawyer" he doesn't even appear until about 50 rows down.

No, the majority of people simply would not make eye contact at all. I suppose it does look a little crazy to be carrying a sign alone. I need more people to do this with.

A few people took the time to read it. One guy gave me a thumbs-up. A woman took my picture for her son, who she says agrees with me.

Hey, Gandhi started all by himself also.

I have extensive experience with signmaking, demonstrating, and street theater. This behavior is par for the course. People will ignore a well reasoned claim or statement. However, if someone starts an argument, suddenly a crowd of people will gather to check their shoelaces and imaginary watches and hang around looking at nothing in particular. Once the argument settles down they will thin out and leave again.

The billboard industry determine long ago you have a budget of 7 seconds and a couple of words to make an impression. Fewer, bigger letters and a graphic would make the sign pop. Make a two sided sign so you can flip it for everyone whose attention you actually catch.

Best way to make signs readable from a distance is with 1 inch foam brush and relatively thin paint. Here are some sign making tips I learned in my activist days and now use in a different more permanent guise.

Plain cardboard works OK for ephemeral signs. If you want to look a little fancier paint it white first.

Wonder if those techniques are applicable to making a more effective "Show Us Your Tits" sign.

That's a misrepresentation. Many states or municipalities have oudoor mask mandates, but they are for contact closer than 6 ft. You can walk around without a mask and just tell people to stay 6 ft away from you if they have a problem, you won't get fined. I have not worn a mask once outdoors. Few municipalities designate town centers, parks and bar and restaurant rows as outdoor "mask zones" where karens may get mad at you if you don't follow, but those aren't enforceable. Plus on the Nevada side in Tahoe everything has been open indoors as well. Prices have been extremely cheap and the crowds have been staying away. One of the better seasons.
