We are thinking of driving around the Seattle Area in June, looking for a place to live if it seems nice enough. But only far outside of Seattle itself, which is expensive, crazy, and anti-white racist up the wazoo.

First I'll check out Olympia, because I have some relatives there. Then Sequim, Port Townsend, and Bellingham.

Bellingham has the nice feature of being on the train line between Seattle and Vancouver, but I don't really know how the town is.

Anyone have advice for nice places to look at? I've been up around there 4 or 5 times, but never really got to know it.

Of course I'm partly motivated by the absence of income tax in Washington State. But it also looks very beautiful, and I happen to like rain.

All comments appreciated.

South Dakota.

No income tax, and solid red.

Sure, there is winter, but it supposedly keeps the riff raff out.

Black Hills, it’s like the banana belt.

Property is probably cheap in SD.

Wonder if I can afford a water view somewhere in Washington State.

Yes. A place with that much rain has lots of water views.

I have not checked for a while, but the houses in Port Townsend and Port Angeles seemed reasonable. I distinctly remember a building used as a church a couple blocks from the Port Angeles ferry dock for about $400k lots of room and zoned commercially. It would have made a nice home.

Here is a nice trip and a nice place to stay: take the Ferry from Seattle to Bremerton. Relax and see the waters!
From Bremerton, you can see several mothballed or refit Aircraft Carriers.

Drive east from Bremerton towards Union and you'll find Alderbrook Resort and Spa. It's a little frou-frou ($$$), but the lodge has huge timbers and an outstanding Clam and Oyster Bar. You can stay at their nice cabins or just walk the pebbly beach.

Be sure you check the tsunami maps before you choose your location on the water.

Any place you find make sure you aren’t too far from a good hospital. 30 min drive is good. You’ll need it when older. In Seattle don’t go where you need a ferry to get to everything, you’ll hate it.

If you like Donuts and coffee, blue star donuts is a fun place to visit.

I had a friend live in some random town in SD a while back. He had a 4 bed house on an acre that looked pretty nice. I think he paid $30-40k. It's probably $60-70k now, but you get the picture.

He liked it out there.

I guess Victoria or Denman island is a bit too remote and probably problematic due to being canuck country. Likely also taxed quite a but but the American dollar will still get you far. It's beautiful up there, better than Vancouver itself. Lots of green, rain and beautiful bays, water still reasonably warm. But prob too far out there ;)
11   Patrick   2021 Apr 26, 2:53pm

I like Victoria, visited once. A bit touristy, but beautiful.

I will have to check out Denman island.

Victoria has a lotsa sailboats.

Anybody ever go to Great Bear Lake?

I think it would be interesting to check that out, someday.
14   mell   2021 Apr 26, 3:13pm

Denman Island used to have zero police (no station), they would have to come over via ferry to check for speeders once a week or so. There simply was no crime and it features an eclectic mix of people and cultures. Beautiful and lush forests and bays. One of the most peaceful parts of the world I stayed at. Of course mostly retirees, but Patrick is a retiree ;)

Never been there. Looks a bit cold but could be beautiful. What's nearest villages/towns there if any, doesn't show any.

There's hardly anything there, other than Délı̨nę - https://mapper.acme.com/?ll=65.186667,-123.421667&z=12&t=M&marker0=65.186667,-123.421667,D%C3%A9l%C4%B1%CC%A8n%C4%99

That's what appeals to me about it. I'd have to bone up on my French, which at this point, is frankly awful. Not that it's a french area, it's Sahtu.

I doubt it would be too cold actually, at least in summer. Very long days up north in summer. I bet it wouldn't be dark in June until something like 10:00 pm, and I bet first light is 5:00

Reminds me too much of childhood in Chicago and Michigan, lol.

The lake was just beautiful saw very few in the lake while I was going around on jet-ski 3ys ago. Population density around the lake was very low and looking calm. This could be a good place to retire.

Bear Lake in UT/ID isn't too bad if water is a going concern. We only stayed two nights and rented a boat one afternoon. Boise, ID and SLC are not all that far either if you need to fly out to another place. https://bearlake.org/

Coeur d’Alene, ID is another good choice. Again water and a nice ski resort in Sandpoint, ID if you're into that. Spokane, WA has a solid airport. https://www.coeurdalene.org/

Both you're dealing with winters, but summers are much better and not raining, though you said you liked that or were okay with it. Both locations you're 5-7 hours from some great places in MT and WY. Jackson, WY is still one of my top 10 non-beach vacation locations. You're still 6 hours to the coast or a 45min flight to the coast. Wasn't sure if you were looking to buy, but prices there should be mostly reasonable to cheap, unless you want to be on a lake.

Note: You really have to like rain to live up there. Your wife too! I spent 3 years up there in the Seattle area and there is nothing better than the NW in the summer - from say late June to September. But then it is drizzly/raining/grey the rest of the time.

Read the actual state guidelines for implementation of the mask mandate (below). You will find that they do NOT require a business to refuse customers who are not wearing masks, or to harass them in any way. They do not require any proof of inability to wear a mask, even from employees. They do NOT protect businesses from discrimination lawsuits for denying service to those with disabilities or damages caused by forcing a mask on an individual. They actually only require a “good faith effort” on the part of a business.

We have heard of businesses receiving threats and fines from Health Departments and Labor & Industries. It’s going to take businesses standing up to these threats and appealing fines as frivolous and unlawful.

I really do. I love rain more than just about anyone else I've met.

The wife could have a problem with it though.
25   AmericanKulak   2021 Apr 27, 7:46pm

I didn't mind rain. But then the Pac NW rain goes from October to April, literally non-stop. Mostly mist. Day after day after day. Not one day of sunshine. Not once a week in the morning for a few hours. Just rain. Overcast, For months, straight.
26   Patrick   2021 Apr 27, 7:51pm

Sounds good to me. I'll just have to remove all the knives from the house so my wife can't stab me for moving up there...
27   Onvacation   2021 Apr 27, 9:43pm

I love the Pacific Northwest.

Portland Oregon is so beautiful May through October. I moved there for a new job and to start a new life on December 11, 1995. I discovered what an ice storm was the first week I was there. It was dark and dreary with lots of porters and stouts. There was a vibrant nightlife. Powell's books was amazing.

The first time I saw the sun was on February 17, 1996. I was on a lunch break and there was a hole in the overcast. It was 17 degrees outside but I went to the park and basked in the sunshine.

Find the right place in the right situation and plan AT LEAST one tropical vacation to break up the winter and it could be paradise. I would love to have my little boat in the Puget sound with a private dock next to my house.

And wherever you go, rent before you buy.
28   Blue   2021 Apr 28, 12:29am

You might want to check Twin falls, ID. Its a nice place.

Is it any different from east coast rain?
30   Ceffer   2021 Apr 28, 9:36am

It's more like a perpetual drizzle, like fog that condenses just enough to wet everything down. I imagine there are people that might like it, but it is depressing to most.

I have heard of spouses who threaten divorce if their husbands don't move away from the Pacific Northwest weather. It's kind of manic depressive: delightful for six months with sweet Pacific sunshine and breezes, and depressing the other six months with perpetual overcast, drizzle, rain.

It used to be like that a bit around the Bay Area, too, but now the rain is more like real rain, and when the pineapple express comes in, heavy rain. In Santa Cruz, you can feel the humidity increase with tropical air masses making it up the coast. Then, overnight, it gets cold and foggy again.

In the Seattle area, one can have a mix of overcast and rain (which never ends) for much of a season.

At least in eastern MA, at most, we get two weeks of rain (basically, a near flood month) before the sun breaks out again. In general, however, it seldom rains continually for more than 3 days at a time. And dry overcast days aren't contiguous.

Even in the dead of winter in Jan/Feb, there have been numerous days where it's both bright and sunny but with frigid temperatures in the 20s. Thus, stay in a warm & cozy room with the shades up and even those long winter months don't feel like ones in the Pacific-NW with constant overcast.

All and all, lack of sun is depressing & I wouldn't want to live in an area where it's not present for much of a winter season.

Yes, wear sunglasses otherwise you could get snow-blinded by walking outdoors, esp if it's after a snow storm.
34   Patrick   2021 Apr 30, 11:15am

I forgot about that, but yes, I remember that it can be brutally bright in the winter when there is sunshine on new snow.

I wouldn't trade it for Seattle's all-winter gray. The fact that there's sun in the coldest months, makes MA a livable area.
36   Patrick   2021 Apr 30, 6:48pm

As they say in German, "Jedem seinem." To each his own.

I personally like drizzle and clouds. Maybe I'm a mutant, but it makes me happy to see it rain.

I get plenty of that at home, as well. But it's not a perma-state, it's more a transitory thing. And yes, I like the rain esp when it balances out too many dry days.

I recall a friend visiting from down south, during a rainy day, believing that it was usually rainy around eastern MA.

I told him, "Look, you arrived a day late and if you hung around for another 48 to 50 hours, it'll be sunny again"

Seattle to San Diego plane tickets are pretty cheap before and after the holidays.

The opportunity to watch the sunset with her toes in the sand might be just the thing to stop your wife from murdering you.
