The war in Afghanistan is not going to end.
The most that can be hoped for is that that it will just be staffed with mercenaries, mostly, at the end.
The US never ended wars now. The US is still in Iraq.

I remember reading that once the US has a military base in a country, they always maintain military bases in that country. Not sure it's true though.

We have military base in Cuba still. In CUBA. It was built in 1898 - that's not a typo - it's more than 100 years old.
It was there during the Cuban missile crisis.

We are still in Germany, Korea, Japan. That being said, apparently, if you go to Korea as a soldier, they treat you like a god because they are grateful for the US presence.

The US is supposed to leave Afghanistan on September 11, 2021 - I'd bet my life that if the US "exits" the US will just staff it with mercenaries instead, and I doubt the US is even going to withdraw. They will just push back the withdrawal forever, although there is no stated mission.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) met with Ghani and other Afghan leaders on Thursday. In a statement on the meeting, McConnell called for a “reversal” of President Biden’s withdrawal.
When asked about McConnell’s comments, Psaki said, “The President made a decision — which is consistent with his view that this was not a winnable war — to bring the US troops home after 20 years of fighting this war.”
Here, McConnell is being a stupid ass.
