We are the parents of a rising senior at Nebraska Wesleyan University. This letter is to ask for clarification on the university's COVID-19 vaccination policy.

Last May, the Director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control stated that vaccinated individuals do not transmit COVID, and thus, need not wear masks. Based on that information, students at NWU were told that vaccinated students would not be required to wear masks on campus this fall; UNVACCINATED students would have to wear masks to protect classmates and would "be subject to" regular testing during the 2021-2022 academic year.

Homebound teachers were assigned to help her finish out the school year, and Elizabeth continued to experience very unpleasant recurring symptoms for several years afterward. That is why we do not want to subject our daughter to a shot that could be risky for her, especially when that shot is arguably unnecessary.

Unfortunately, the Adolescent Specialist from XXXXXXX Hospital who knows our daughter's full history has retired. The new PCM assigned to Elizabeth in Williamsburg for the summer had never met Elizabeth prior to her appointment, was unfamiliar with her medical history, and was not comfortable signing Nebraska Wesleyan's medical exemption form as worded.

We are not "anti-vaccine". I am a retired Air Force officer with a long history of vaccinations. My wife is a former schoolteacher with a similar vaccine history--including COVID shots from Pfizer. Most older members of our family have had COVID shots, as the benefits of the vaccine for older people outweigh its risks. As a 21-year-old, however, Elizabeth is in an age group that has proven very resilient to COVID-19 and the Delta variant. (The 527 students and staff members from NWU who caught COVID in the past 12 months, including unvaccinated students, have fully recovered--that's excellent news!) Now the CDC has announced our daughter's chances of transmitting the virus are much the same as vaccinated students.

My questions to you are:
1. If the FDA "fast-tracks" approval for the Pfizer shot in September, as it has promised to do, must all UNVACCINATED students get the Pfizer shot before they can finish the
Fall 2021 semester?
2. Would Elizabeth would be permitted to finish her Senior year without getting the Pfizer shot?

Nebraska Wesleyan University allows unvaccinated students with religious exemptions on campus and in classrooms. But our family does not qualify for a religious exemption as--until now--we have never objected to vaccinations. Nevertheless, we have very strong concerns and want to protect our daughter from another potential, unnecessary medicine risk.
