Why would someone use the word "go" in a url?

I've seen some websites that have "go" in the url. An example would be go.website.com.

Go is a subdomain of website dot com here. Maybe its being used as a way to direct new users through a welcome portal, and/or to track offline marketing channels. People are probably much more likely to type in the example URL correctly, than they would be with a radio ad directing them to website.com-forwardslash-welcome

I have not seen "go" in a url yet.

But any site can make whatever subdomains it wants. I could make go.patrick.net with a couple minutes of configuration.

There's a long running radio ad in the area that references go.shittyforprofituniversity.edu.
