500,000 containers waiting offshore. What the hell is Mayor Pete (USSec of Transportation) doing about this? Weren't we promised a 'more competent' government than Trump's? Or was it just that we'd see a lot less mean tweets?

Just half a million containers not boats. But still.

How many per boat? 500? Then there are 1,000 boats idling out there.

Radio news reporting today how Biden came up with a new plan to break the gridlock at the ports of LA and Long Beach, which are semi-local to me. He took credit for getting the ports to work 24/7 to unload the cargo, "Adding 60 hours per week."

My immediate reaction was, "You mean, they aren't doing that ALREADY?!?" Then, "Los Angeles already invented this plan during the 1984 Olympics, and it worked so well they started incentivizing shifting truck and delivery traffic off commuter hours even after the Olympics."

All Biden has to do is lift the stimulus and everyone goes back to work. Besides a licensed position like Doctor, lawyer, pilot, etc. anyone can get a job today, even if they aren't fully qualified with experience. We're experiencing what giving people free things looks like. This is why universal basic incomes would destroy our nation. It's been an interesting test trial, but we need to get back to normal.

We're also building a generation of kids that are going to hold a ton of resentment. All three of mine bitch daily about wearing masks for school. You can't say follow the science and then not follow it as a person of authority when the science is obvious. Masks don't work. There is so much wrong right now. It's sad.

Time is money. And yes, if they have kids. If you have 3-4 kids and a wife you likely got paid close to $15k in stimulus and then there were UE benefits as things slowed down and they got laid off. Why go back to work when you're getting something like 80% of your previous pay, plus say $750/mo for 3 kids?

People are now seeing hiring bonus deals and they're holding out in hopes of higher offers as they can live on what they're getting. We've taken productive people out of the work force and that's why we're seeing this. Even if it's 10% less monthly, they don't have to drive, etc. It's cheaper to not work. If I worked in Chicago still, my costs monthly would be $600/mo roughly to get back and forth with tolls and gas alone. If I got UE benefits, plus the kids stimulus (I get neither) it would make sense to sit at home.

We know there's major earthquake faults in that area. One of them runs right under those waters offshore, between Catalina Island and the coast. Some minor underwater faults run parallel to it.

A major quake on the San Andreas or any of the other faults could shut down the Ports of LA and LB, even if the actual docks and cranes (are they built atop "fill" ?) were unscathed.

A big quake on an offshore fault could cause a tsunami that could scatter those cargo ships like a little kid wrecking a board game.

Became a stout 'Reaganite' as my high school AP US History teacher called us.
Most young people liked Reagan during his presidency, especially at Baylor. The left didn't like that one bit, said it was because he reminded them of an amiable grandpa. "Students", after all, as any group of rioting young people got to be called in those days, were supposed to mount the ramparts in protest. In the early days of the '79 Iranian revolution the media would refer to the rioting mobs as "students" until they got called out on it.

The problem with ILWU labor is skilled labor. A bunch of the boomers retired during Covid because they were scared. They held the best easiest jobs like clerking. That made room for skilled labor like crane and top handler drivers to move up to become clerks. Which made room for others to move up and become crane and top drivers. BUT there’s a problem because 1)these positions are skilled and the drivers have to be trained and checked out on the equipment before picking up a job. And that hasn’t been done to nearly a high enough scale because the rule that you have to have a certain level of work history/experience (maybe 10+ years) before being able to be trained for those jobs. Which wasn’t going on to the scale it needed to be. So while they are training away fast as possible, the bottleneck persists and not enough skilled labor is available. It’s mostly just poor organization in the ILWU and poor foresight and the Boomers fucking over the world before shuffling off into the Great Beyond.

Basis of this website, the housing crash fucked a ton of things over. Skilled labor in trades and transportation are shit. It took a decade and a half and a pandemic, but that was the crux of the entire issue we deal with today. Along with pushing college and 60% of the degrees being bull shit.

We'll see where my kids are in a few years. Likely going to push trades and business degrees. Most men don't even know how to use a nail gun or build basic framing. Change a tire. Tile a floor. Those guys in the trades will make bank if they know how to operate and run a company.

Ahem, gentlemen: outsourcing and globalism are behind it.

A bunch more retired or quit to avoid the clot shot.

Yes, I read a post from a port worker who said he was definitely not getting the injection no matter what.
