They will of course try to save themselves. This is common. Every media outlet lied about the weapons of mass destruction program in Iraq, and "corrected" themselves after it didn't matter any more to try to regain their credibility.

The purpose of the internet was to expose of the criminality of the government - it wasn't wasn't to collapse it, it was to try to get them to reform.
