Anyone know when the insanity will end? People paying $10k markups above MSRP on most decently equipped vehicles? Used Model 3 Tesla’s with 15k miles selling for over MSRP of factory ordered models? Now Tesla just hiked prices of all their cars by around 5% again. So I’m sure tomorrow used Tesla’s will increase their asking prices by $2k-5k.

Will prices crash down in a few years… or are new cars gonna be $40k and up moving forward?

If one needs a commuter car, Prius is the best value IMO. If one needs a truck, buy Toyota. It lasts forever. I’ve owned 3 in my years.

If one wants a performance EV, buy a Tesla. To compare a Prius against a Tesla is ridiculous.

I ordered a Model X for my wife in July 2021 for $90k. The same car is going for $115k now. Inflation is NOT transitory folks.

As mentioned above, Toyota trucks and 4Runners are just indestructible. Our 4Runner just keeps going and going.

But I will say, at 18mpg avg and $6/gal, hurts a bit.

I was going to ask the same question but then thought better of it since some people have the $$ to change vehicles as often as I change tennis shoes...yearly.

I like new cars. Swap them every 5-8 years. I’m going to give my 2017 Model S to my wife’s older brother next year when I pick up my cybertruck. My wife will give her 2017 MDX to my little sister once she picks up her 2022 Model X.

It’s our family tradition to pass down older cars to our siblings. On my side of the family, we always give. On wife’s side, they tend to sell at a discount.

I hear you. It’s time to get a Prius, but it doesn’t do the same job as a truck or a 4Runner. I believe the MDX hybrid is averaging around 26-28 mpg, but it’s a $50k car.

My Dad's 2013(?) Camery with manual trans averages around 30mpg.

The fuel economy sucks though. You'd be lucky to get 1 mpg.

It was to bad when both auto makers stopped bringing the Fit and Yaris to the U.S. I hope they bring them back, zippy little things, so light, warms up fast in the winter, mpg amazing. These are the little drifter cars besides, this size class always, specifically the hondas always won the races, nobody wants them. The Yaris is a 1.3, while the rolla is 1.8 so look at all the power you get, 3 cylinder and up to 50 mpg.

My folks had a Prius for a long time. Some dude drove off the road and totaled my mom's car sitting in the driveway. So a new car was needed a couple months back. She got the hybrid plug in Rav 4 and is loving it. I couldn't stand it, but for a granny it does the job and is super cheap for someone that does little driving. She'll probably fill up 4-5 times this year. It was 1 of 2 in the entire state.

I'm becoming a Toyota fan boy, but I'd say Nissan is pretty close if not better in some cases. I have a Versa and Armada (and 4-Runner now) with about 208k miles each (not the 4-Runner). Before our Sequoia got wrecked last fall, I still preferred to drive a 2012 decked out Armada. I know the 4-Runner will be solid, but I don't like the layout and infotainment systems. It's awkward. My biggest beef with Toyota. I will be upset when the Armada has to go. Needs rear suspension work, but otherwise it's still amazing. Might be my first 300k car.

We recently parted ways with a much loved 2004 Toyota Highlander. The dealer offered $4,000 for it, but they basically matched a Carmax quote for $5,000 when presented with it. Bought a 2022 Subaru Outback Touring XT. Had to wait 3 month for it. Paid below MSRP, leveraging a Costco quote. 4 cylinder turbo which gives the Outback decent acceleration, one complaint about the 4 cylinder non-turbo. They did away wth the 6 cylinder Outback. Don't really mind the CVT.
25   WookieMan   2022 Mar 25, 6:35am

Subaru's seem like solid cars when I've been in them. Never driven one. Not a judgement of you, but Subaru's do have the lesbian, leftist mountain chick vibe. Mind you this statement is coming from someone who drove a little Nissan Versa for the better part of a decade. I have an opinion on a lot of makes and models. I also was driving in Denver and saw a chick with the most amazing seat belt cleavage in a Subaru. She was model hot from what I could tell staring at her... lol.

Ugh, I hate reading this thread. Makes me think of losing the Sequoia in a not at fault accident. We got a $50k+ car for $32k(ish). One of those once in a lifetime deals on a big ticket item you generally finance. I use debt, but I hate it. Would have had that bad boy paid of in under 2 years and only 70k miles. That thing drove like a tank in a good way. Talking with my neighbor to see what he can sell his Sequoia for in April. He's a Toyota employee end and gets pool cars to just drive around so they can learn them and then teach dealer sales people.

The 4-Runner is working out though. Still love my Armada though in our fleet.

Some of the finest cars on earth:

4Runner
Tacoma
Lexus GS

Problem is that at $6/gal, getting under 20mpg hurts when there are more efficient alternatives.

More things to break for sure. As a frequent towing person the back-up camera has saved me hours over the last decade aligning the hitch and hasn't broken. All the other shit I agree with. I don't need automatic braking. I'm fucking driving and should be present. If you're not you shouldn't be driving.

So do I. Straight mountain women tend to be thinner as well because they hike more frequently. Not so much in the midwest where I'm at. Though there are some sneaky hotties out there. Obviously the cities with chicks looking for sugar daddies. I'm happily married, but eye candy never hurts. Wisconsin is a strange place. You'll meet a bow hunting 10 chick at the bar. It's weird. Honestly Wisconsin is one of the reasons I won't move out of IL. Minnesota isn't too bad. Michigan is "rural" Chicago. Bunch of douche bags, at least near Lake Michigan.

Some guys are buying used Volvo Cross Country wagons and lifting them and putting BF Goodrich K2 all terrain tires on them.

They are good for back roads, maybe not rock crawling but who needs that anyway.

I’m going to see about a Toyota Hilux in Mexico, they are thousands of bucks cheaper than the (superior) Tacoma. But you can get a Hilux with 4 cylinders, manual transmission, no electric windows, and fewer bullshit features.

Hasta la vista baby.

If you are not looking, something is wrong with you, IMHO. I've been spending a lot of time in Germany, and at least with the folks I work with, in spite of the obesity stats for the country, the women are generally in very good shape. A good deal of blondes. Tall women, too. Very family oriented and so it seems more normal for women there to get married and plop out a few kids. Considering that the USA is primarily a Germanic-Celtic country, people there look rather familiar in general. But a lot of women have that lilting falsetto conversational voice that is rather feminine, a good thing. Not wishing to seem impolite, I would always offer positive comments on Merkel when she was in power, to which the typical response was - meh....

Call around. The $5-10k over MSRP has been going on for over a year now.

If you want a Tesla, just order it new for MSRP. If you want another make/model, find a dealer that doesn't charge over sticker.

You'll likely have to order it and wait a month or two, but didn't pay over sticker.

I got my Toyota new for $1500 under sticker from Jack Sherman Toyota in NY in November. I ordered it and waited about 1-2 months, and drove it back. Airfare was only $150 and the dealer picked me up. Had it back in GA next day.

Saved $6-7k from buying it local with the stupid markups.

I am in the market for a Toyota. Live in Ohio. What's the best path for buying a new Toyota?
40   NuttBoxer   2022 Apr 8, 10:08am

Just a reminder, you only have to spend what you want to. No need to ever live beyond your means. And in fact, the more people say no to ridiculous prices, the longer inventory sits, and the lower the prices must go. That or the dealerships go bust. It's not what you charge for something that determines price, it's what someone's willing to pay you.

My last car was a lemon, so stopped putting money into it and got another used one about a year ago. Overpaid about a thousand, but total was only $3,000 cash. The only maintenance I've needed since purchase is rear brakes.

Don't believe the hype.
41   Eric Holder   2022 Apr 8, 10:47am

Every time I'm choosing between repairing one of my old cars and buying a new(er) one I compare the cost of parts (I do my own wrenching) with the sales tax I'll have to pay on the new(er) ride. So far the cost of parts has been way lower (knock on wood).

I had to recently pay for a remanufactured short block for my wife's vehicle. Used prices were so fucked up it was cheaper to replace the engine than buy a replacement vehicle. This is a southern car, so no rust, etc. issues.

Thanks to the "sort by Price (High)" filter, it's easy to see the most egregious offenders, such as a dealership in Oklahoma that added an extra $200,000 on a new Hummer EV. Porschephiles might be unsurprised by the $150,000 ADM attached to a 911 GT3 in California or an extra $50,000 tacked on to the more prosaic (though still very good) Porsche 911 GTS.

Porsche of Redwood City has 1 (yes, one) 911 for sale; the price is listed as "call for price." 5 years ago I would expect to see 20 or more in inventory for sale. The cheapest non-trucklet — the base level Cayman — has "demo pricing" of $87k! The trucklets are mostly lease deals with a few listed as "call for price."

Porsche of Stevens Creek (the largest dealer here) lists that same single 911 and has no Caymans or Boxsters at all. The 911 is a turbo model, so that means the dealer has zero stick-shifts for sale (at least brand new). Very sad.

My guess is that Porsche manufacturing has been crippled and so they are just raising prices on the last few available. There are some people for which the money just doesn't matter.

As far as Porsche's GT cars (not counting the GTS, which is a very nice car, but basically just an expensive S), the availability and pricing has always been crazy, with people willing to spend big with the expectation that the car will not depreciate. Of course that also means you can't drive it much, but occasional expensive track days and just the joy of seeing it sit in the garage is worth the $250k to some people.
