That dependence might be good for us in some cases, but it weakens the military strength of the alliance when your enemies know most of the countries will blow their wad in a few days of war.

To be fair to the French in WWII, they realized it was just another goddamned war between their governments, and having gone through what at the time was "The Great War" didn't give a crap about the outcome.

There's a LOT of propaganda about WWII that survives to this day as "fact", but getting into that, it's just way outside the Overton Window, because it's now considered "fact".

I had family that went through WWII in Poland so I know a LITTLE about the propaganda 2nd hand from them. Poland I think has one of the most correct histories of what transpired, but who knows, every population can be propagandized. It's only very recently that has changed.

If the US went to war with Iraq over weapons of mass destruction in 1953 instead of 2003, it would have been considered "fact" that Iraq did have a weapons of mass destruction program and they were close to making a nuclear weapon. The propaganda for the war would have stood, at least for several decades, as absolute fact. The propaganda for WWII is just recently being challenged and it began in the 1990s. Whether the challenges are correct or not, I can't know, but I do know questioning the established "history" leads to jail sentences in many areas of Europe.

When I was a kid, it was accepted as fact that Jewish people were being killed and their bodies rendered into things like soap and lampshades. That was before DNA testing. All of that was false.
