Not sure beating back applies here. Seems to me that Russian troops are advancing and controlling more and more territory. Map was supposedly current as of March 14.

My Opinion:
* the Russian Navy is playing games in Odessa, threatening an amphib attack that may or may not happen. Just like MacArthur put empty amphibs on the East Coast of North Korea to keep the NORKs guessing before he stormed Inchon. This keeps AFU forces that could be redeployed elsewhere in the neighborhood.
* Looks like a Cauldron took place SE of Sumy, With another possibly forming along the Dneipr. I suspect a large concentration of AFU forces were W and NW of Luhansk/Donetsk.
* Kiev is almost totally encircled. The bigger steps are possibly in that drive NW from Mykolaiv to the Moldavian Border to cut off Odessa Oblast completely, and possibly another to cut off the whole Dneipr and East, though the drive North from
Though I'm certainly not rooting for putler not that bad for a "madman loser". Not sure if he's interested in many other cities if negotiations go well, but he may at least sit on and keep Mariupol for a while. They are not in a rush and the more they control at the time z starts taking the negotiations seriously the better their position. The Ukraine should have come immediately to the table on day one, then they could have kept everything but select donbass without destruction. They got some bad "advice" from their Western "friends". But the US and Canada are very interested in fanning the flames of war at the expense of the Ukrainian people, the longer this goes the more people may forget about their infringements on civil liberties by their leaders from !covid!
