A popular method of regime change in the Kremlin is assassination. Putin has used poison on people he disliked, so he’s got a food taster.
If you wondered why he sits so far away from people in meetings, it’s harder for anything to reach him that way. What could it be? Who knows, maybe a guy has a poison dart hidden in his tie; he’s going to miss Putin from that distance.
But maybe Putin can detect danger and quickly pivot and claim a victory of sorts in Ukraine, so he can leave gracefully.
The reason sanctions don’t matter much is the average Russian is so fucked he doesn’t notice a difference yet; do you think guys making $6000/year miss shopping at the Apple store?
What would matter is Germany not buying natural gas from Russia, providing Putin with billions of dollars each month to replace the equipment the Ukraine soldiers have blasted.
Germany can’t replace the thousands of dead Russians, and thousands more wounded, and a half dozen dead generals.
