An interesting spin on a "tankless water heater" - if you goto a poor neighborhood in the tropics, you'll see many do without a water heater. Instead, they use a 110v plug in water heater that just screws in behind your showerhead. The water goes in and gets heated as it passes through internal heating coils. Granted, they dont work too well, as 110v * 15A just cant put out enough energy to raise the water temp too much. They usually get used in combo with a water saver shower head; not to save water, but by restricting the water flow rate, the water temp can be raised a few more degrees.

It's a little unsettling though to have a power cord going into your shower, especially knowing that its basically a hairdryer with water going through it. But theyre dirt cheap, and work well enough. A big part of this though is that the tropics have fairly warm tap water, so the heater doesnt need to elevate the temp too much.

Hmmmm...I am going to start a new thread on that!

...and so here we are.

I think you should reprogram that energy back into new tit.
2   SunnyvaleCA   2022 Apr 11, 8:07pm

Many hot water heaters in Florida are electric. The tap water is something like 80 degrees already.
The way crazy California is going, natural gas will be outlawed in homes.
Given how well the sun works here, a solar hot water heater would work quite well; maybe with a backup gas/electric.

When I lived in South America many years ago, we had those shower heads. They always scared the hell out of me but it meant not taking an ice cold shower.

Haha! Me too. South America is where I ran into those devices.

I used them. So did countless others. And, I survived, as did the others. So, I cannot condemn them. Time tested and all.

But, geez, seeing two raggedy electrical wires going to the shower head was nerve racking.

My time was in Quito, Ecuador - a city that sits more than 9000 feet above sea level. Like you mention, the alternative was an ice cold shower.

Funny. I spent quite a bit of time in Pasto, Colombia, right near you. We went to Ipiales across the border a few times...cool little town.

I was in Cuenca, Ecuador during COVID. High Altitude + Mask Wearing.

I miss South America now, though, the US is crazy town.
7   Tenpoundbass   2022 Jul 8, 12:00pm

I did the crazy shower head thing in Peru as well. Add the ground fault they had in their Electrical system, you had to endure a 24v jolt to engage or disengage the power on the head. I just braved the cold water.

Down here in Florida the tankless water heaters are a flat tank mounted to the wall, about 24 inches by 14 inches, and about 1 or 2 inches thick. It's the same concept but the water goes through heated coils. The water heater is mounted on the wall somewhere near the shower or kitchen sink.
8   anniecoyote   2022 Jul 8, 12:16pm

Yep, in Colombia same thing with the scary electric shower head. Bucaramanga, San Gil, Curiti, all the small towns and little hotels. Not so much in Bogota.

Not today, but I first found out that not two but three towers were blown up in NYC on 9/11/2001 back when I first found this site in 2013.

That was the beginning of my cynicism towards our government. If not for that revelation I MIGHT be castigating all you antivaxxers.

@Hircus What software do you use to automatically run user javascript on various web pages?

It would be quite convenient to automatically disable javascript on sites which use it to erect paywalls.

Would also be nice to automatically disable javascript timers so you don't get popups after some timeout.

Tampermonkey. Basically a modern greasemonkey extension.

Greasemonkey scripts are the ultimate low budget way to customize websites. Its much easier than writing a browser extension.

I'm not sure offhand how to use it to disable js though. A browser extension like noscript might be needed. I often have 1 tab where I disable js, and then whenever I encounter a url where I want to disable js, I just paste the url into that tab. This is how to disable js in a single tab in chromium based browsers: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/devtools-guide-chromium/javascript/disable

Basically 2.5 hotkeys to do it, but it requires you leave devtools open or js will reenable.
16   Patrick   2022 Sep 12, 9:38pm

I wonder if I could do almost everything I want with bookmarklets.

I could write a bookmarklet to load a page and then immediately modify it, I think.

But I'm not sure I could disable javascript from javascript.

A simple fix, which I sometimes use, is just holding the escape key down right after the page loads.

Usually I find anything behind a paywall isn't worth consuming though anyhow.

wget and curl can grab a webpage for offline viewing as well.

@richwicks What does that do? Can it somehow stop javascript?

I tried it on https://www.theepochtimes.com/irrefutable-proof-study-on-mrna-vaccines-causing-damage-doctors-respond-to-who-fact-checking-branch_4745184.html?utm_source=share-btn-copylink and it blocked the popup. Nice!

Thanks for this.

It sometimes does under Linux.

It just interrupts the process of whatever is running, sometimes. It doesn't always work, but it used to work for a few sites. Not certain it will work with APPLE.

Again, when I hit a paywall, I generally skip it, if I really want to see it I check archive.org. If that doesn't work, I try escape, if that doesn't work wget and curl. If that doesn't work, I will copy the first 10 words of the article (often visible) and enter that in a search engine in quotes. If THAT doesn't work, it's not worth reading.

Not always in that order. 99% of stuff behind a firewall isn't worth consuming. It's almost always a vacant opinion piece anyhow. It's no common I can learn anything from mainstream "news", I just get the propaganda push.

You are thinking of the AC-47 gunship. The AC-47 is a military version of the old recip prop engine DC-3. The AC-130 is called Specter, which carried a 105mm howitzer (and other guns) it fired out a side door.

What Does a Red or Yellow Dot on Your Tires Mean?

Do those red and yellow paint dots on tires mean the tires are on sale? Is there something wrong with tires marked with these dots? Do the dots indicate where or when the tires were made?

Nope, nope and nope. Here is what's really going on with these dots:

Cool! Basic balancing protocol. Any unbalance creates forces that increase at the square of the rotational speed. So it's most important for racing.

The ancient weapon was dug up in the small German town of Nordlingen
Experts were shocked to find how shiny it was despite laying in a burial site
They are unsure where the sword was made or who the people are at this grave

@Kepi - it might cause you a heart attack, but try an ice cold shower. They actually are invigorating. I take them all the time in summer, in winter, I want to experience warmth in winter, in summer, I don't need it.

When I say "invigorating" what I mean is you are using your mind to forcibly control your body. There's no pain, it's discomfort, but it doesn't harm you. Heart rate might go up, and perhaps it's SLIGHTLY dangerous? It's just exercising control over your primal instincts.

When I do this, I walk out of the shower, cold, and very very aware.
32   Ceffer   2023 Jun 17, 7:04pm

You can see the exacting failure of Germany if they think that is shiny. Do their trains run on time any more?

This is why most movies that involving a drinking binge end with a cold shower and they're laying on the floor. I can't do it to be honest. A friend does 2-3 minute cold showers daily. He says he's noticing a difference after about a year overall. I think it's a placebo effect, but I do know it will wake your ass up if you do it early.

It doesn't take a year to notice an effect. You'll notice it immediately.

I've taken ice baths before bed in hot summers. I went to bed quivering and shaking, but I slept very well.

There's something unnatural about taking a warm shower or bath I think however it's exhausting to drain all that heat out of your body. It's not a placebo effect, it stresses your body. How long have we even had access to warm bathing and showers? 200 years at most? Even daily bathing is a new concept.

In any case, it makes balancing the heat from the shower head simple and quick.

Disagree. A cold shower first thing in the morning will jumpstart your metabolism and get your day going right.

But I'm not trying to do that.

My day starts with a long shit while I check the news on my phone followed by a hot shower and breakfast.
