Chickens are excellent sources of protein and relatively easy to produce. They eat bugs too.

Chickens are amazing. They grow really fast, lay eggs (well, half of them do), and thrive on grass and bugs.

Downsides are the shit they produce (great fertilizer though) and the need to keep them safe from raccoons and the like.

They're called "chapulines".
I've had them; they tasted like nothing but they're prepared with some stuff which reminds me of Maggi sauce (like wheat soy sauce).
The trick is don't look when you eat one.

I know in places like Virginia, we were using invasive species bugs like stinkbugs to feed egg-laying chickens. I used the chicken manure as fertilizer for my fruit orchards (berries, peaches, and apples).

A cricket-paste factory like the Ontario, Canada one mentioned above would be ideal for supporting chicken egg industry, as well as fish farming and shrimp farming.

The article about the cricket-paste factory said it was for pet food. I think for a dog you can feed it grains like brown rice and barley, that have some protein. We give our dogs broccoli, cauliflower and potatoes, including sweet potatoes.

I know dogs can eat peanut butter also for protein, as long as it does not have synthetic sugar, and carefully fed so they don't eat too much to risk choking.
