Global semiconductor stocks were under pressure on Friday after Micron Technology Inc.’s profit warning that flagged demand was cooling for chips used in computers and smartphones.

The largest US maker of memory semiconductors said it is moving swiftly to stave off a chip glut. That’s a big reversal in trend in an industry that suffered from a crunch since 2020, when the pandemic created a combination of high demand and supply-chain bottle necks hurting production of everything from home appliances to cars.

This hasn't helped the auto industry yet.

Yes, something is not adding up.

yeah wtf with car chip shortage shit? how fucking hard is it to make a chip? it smells like some industrial collusion

Bitcoin (et al.) mining fell off the cliff due to price collapse. You can actually get a video card (that was being used to mine coin) today for about MSRP. If coin prices remain low, prices will decline further.

Demand exceeds supply. So chipmakers stop making the older, less profitable chips that the auto industry uses. Now that Bitcoin is tanking and that and other factors have reduced demand, along with reduced supply bottleneck, the automakers are finally catching a break. Also Tesla, BMW, and Mercedes have switched to using newer types of semiconductors that they can actually get. Toyota still seems to have a lot of trouble because they don't stock inventory at their plants. GM managed to outsell Toyota because of this.

AMD should be fine.

You'd be amazed at how hard it is.

Eventually there's going to be an aftermarket for "computer chips" that are really just FPGAs.

I thought there is no shortage of FPGAs and car chips are relatively dumb that can be done easily with FPGA. Why there is still shortage! unless FPGAs can not be used in cars.

The automakers don't want to switch to newer chips. The newer chips cost more, and there is a ton of testing involved. It's mostly a supplier issue, and can get bureaucratic. Now for a car company that makes their own stuff, much less of a problem to potentially switch.

When the shortage hit, Elon Musk's team of programmers shifted to reworking existing code to work on other, more available chips to get them through the supply chain issues. Tesla continued to ship and grow deliveries even through all the shortages. This is a key difference between Tesla and other Car companies: Software is a least equal in development priority to hardware. Tesla vehicles increase value over time, instead of losing value.

BTW, you all knew Tesla makes its own, specialized chips to solve the Self Driving problem, right? This supercomputer is currently the world's 5th largest Computer system. This includes all state-sponsored supercomputers from the USA, China, Japan, etc. Think about that: Musk is applying insane computing power to Self-driving, while most other systems are dedicated to running nuclear bomb, climate change or oil exploration problems.

Of course, this system will also be used to generate software that will be used for the General Purpose Robot Musk is designing.

Consider that a single finished 300mm wafer running a leading edge technology can have in excess of 100 layers, take multiple months to reach the point it can be diced, and carry a $50k cost to the MFG.

When you turn off the supply in 2020 because of uncertainty in the severity of new virus affecting the globe, you can’t just then turn it on many months later and expect product to be at your doorstep.

There is no conspiracy here…
