The California State Senate passed a bill last week that would prevent employers from requiring employees to intervene to stop shoplifting — a growing scourge in the state since the enactment of criminal justice reforms.

SB 553, introduced by Silicon Valley’s State Sen. Dave Cortese (D-Cupertino), is described as a bill to prevent and monitor “workplace violence.” But it also includes a provision that “every employer shall establish, implement, and maintain, at all times in all of the employer’s facilities, a workplace violence prevention plan for purposes of protecting employees and other personnel from aggressive and violent behavior at the workplace” that “shall include … [p]rovisions prohibiting the employer from maintaining policies that require employees to confront active shooters or suspected shoplifters.”

As San Francisco Bay Area Fox affiliate KTVU reported, retail associations are furious, believing that the bill will tell potential thieves that they can steal goods at will:

[O]ver 50 organizations, including the California Retailers Association, (CRA) don’t support the bill.

“This bill goes way too far, number one, where I think it will open the doors even wider for people to come in and steal from our stores.”

The CRA says if SB 553 becomes law, it will need to apply to all industries and not just retail. They also say most retailers already prohibit regular employees from approaching anyone about stolen merchandise and have some employees who are trained in theft prevention.

“It says no employee can approach someone who is shoplifting. So even if someone is trained on how to deter someone from doing that, now they’re not allowed to approach someone. So, what does that mean? We are opening up the door to allow people to walk into stores, steal and walk out,” Michelin said.

It's absolutely amazing how insane California has become.
The people in the trailer parks and hoods are crazy in Florida, but in California it's the politicians who are crazy.
3   Tenpoundbass   2023 Jun 8, 6:00am

What about the babies out in the burning car while mom is inside shoplifting, do we just let them roast?
4   RayAmerica   2023 Jun 8, 6:43am

What's next? Will the legislators pass a law mandating that retailers post a sign at the front door, reading:

"We Don't Discriminate Against Anyone, Including Shoplifters. All Are Welcome"

No doubt, Gov. Dufus would sign such a bill.

Communism. I now loathe the state I live in.

Every store will convert to something where you can only pick up stuff already ordered and paid for with no access to product to the general public until it's paid for. Of course this will increase labor costs which will be passed on to the consumer.

It will push everything to Amazon and walmart delivery.

I'm not understanding the problem with the general jist of the law. If I work somewhere like Dollar Tree or randomclothes store and my employer tells me I'm REQUIRED to confront armed robbers, I'm going to tell him to fuck off. It just sounds like they're legally protecting employees' agency over their decisions during a robbery situation. Additionally, requiring some training on how to handle those situations is just par for those level jobs, they already have mandatory fire safety and other shit trainings.
11   RC2006   2023 Jun 8, 8:48am

Next law to tell home owners they have to leave instead of confronting burglers. Tell people to comply with robbers directions. Maybe even a certification program for criminals on how to properly commit crimes and give instructions to victims.

There used to be an assumption that most people had a built-in moral compass that prevented things like this, but that has slowly eroded away with the entitlement mentality of the past several decades. Now it's you owe me and by golly I'm going to take it.
14   Karloff   2023 Jun 8, 10:19am

Shopkeepers used to keep a gun under the counter. A couple of cleanups on aisle 7 and neighborhood thugs would learn to knock it off.

But I agree with DhammaStep. You can't force unarmed minimum wage kids to confront violent perps when cops and DAs won't do their job in keeping them off the streets.

It's designed to go after mom and pops.

Security guards are exempt; so it's the small stores that don't have full time security.

The politicians in California are the election fraud KommieKunt Soros Fecal Impaction riff raff. The era of responsible public servants who can do planning, math and practical civic economics started crumbling around 1990.

When the golden goose is dead, the political Zimbabwe farms plundered, and the deluded forebrain-less goons and apparatchiks are staring at each other over the empty tables in Sacto with their gang tats and their rhetoric, they will go back to their warlord fiefdom ghettos to complete the third (fourth) worldization of California.

After all, this is all about Soros subversion and destruction. The Club of Rome hates the US, and dictated that the American middle class had to be eliminated along with the Constitution. Putting the quasi illiterates in charge is part of the game.

I'd guess this is where 20 to maybe 50% of the theft comes from. And it's not necessarily NOT paying for it.

I had leeway to mark things down in the sporting goods department for a high school job. I did. Then I bought it 80% reduced price. Kind of theft, kind of not. Employees steal more than people understand. Hell my gas is paid for by my wife's company and I don't work for it. Thing is it's the little things that aren't technically illegal that people get away with. Wife sells $6,000,000 annually cash and my $2,000 of gas is a nothing burger. And they know.

I wouldn't advise any employee to stop a theft in action though. Easy way to get yourself killed or hurt. You then lose your job and try to sue the business, and maybe get lucky.
20   RayAmerica   2023 Jun 10, 11:23am

I have a retired friend who's wife worked part-time at a suburban Walmart. Her job was to check receipts on big ticket items at the front of the store. The husband told me that the store was frequented by blacks due to its proximity to a neighboring town that has a high black population. He told me that "every single work night, his wife encountered people walking out the door with expensive items. The stated policy of management was to "let them go and do not confront them." Word must have spread regarding this policy because the 'loss' for this store doubled in only one year, from $1 million to $2 million.

Also, the store was pressured to hire minority workers, so they did. Numerous cashiers were caught, and fired, for ringing up only a fraction of very large orders for their friends and family members. This practice was so common that cashiers were a revolving door, when one was fired only to be replaced by another that was caught doing the very same thing.

My friend's wife thought working part-time at Walmart would be a fun experience. She quit after having her taste of the real world.

Not at all. At that age I was a total delinquent that stole frequently, but I will admit that those were the acts of a thief. But as an adult I changed my behavior. The issue is not that you were only 17, it is that today you consider the activity you did then as not really stealing, and even today you said you pilfer gas from your wife's employer. Kid's make mistakes, which is why it was my policy was never to prosecute anyone under 18 for shoplifting or pilfering. A adult should have matured to the point of having integrity.

On Gutfield last night kevin O’Leary said the retail industry standard for shrinkage is 2%.

He said the standard in San Francisco is 12%.

If you don’t understand how astonishingly bad that is, you should really rethink your life and the poor choices you have made.

This new law is yet another push towards communism by the Evan Lows and Richard Pans of the Democrat party. An attempt to vicariously claim via lie that people steal because they are poor and victims of systemic racism, another fabricated fairly tale of the communists. All of this is to devalue physical possessions…similar to how Newsome and Eric Garcetti repeatedly lied and said that the homeless deserve compassion and all sorts of chow meow while allowing the homeless population to grow unchecked.

How Garcetti is getting away with his actions while Karen Bass is actually reducing LA’s homeless population is beyond me.

And if they are successful at implementing Communism, there will be no mercy for anyone who steals from a State Store (provided they actually have stock to steal).

Smoke and mirrors. Mostly it’s to try and convince others not to steal.

The whole concept right now is completely retarded. You can’t have a civilization without some sort of enforcement mechanism. Once fully implemented, as head set said, the laws will again be enforced. It’s exactly how nefarious the Democrats in California are. Those Democrats pushing all of this really just want their seat at the fat pig table once the changes are made. The mouth breathing morons that vote for them don’t realize they are voting for their own doom and the happy faggots want to celebrate men giving the ol in n out to another man’s rectum and don’t realize how truly fucked they will be under the new regime.

CA raised the grand theft limit to $950 a while back. And now they passed a bill making it illegal for employer to require employees to confront thieves/shoplifters.

For their safety, I don’t think employees should do this anyway and I don’t think it was happening much.

With shoplifting there was always grey area… if I walk out with these, will someone confront me. What risk am I taking by trying to walk out with his iPhone charger?

But with this bill, isn’t it open season? $950 and it’s illegal to try and stop me?

For the record, I don’t give much of a shit about corporations and their profits. However, I’m seeing a lot more shit locked up in stores and store theft is all over nextdoor with people saying that so and so just walked right out without paying.

Thoughts?

A combination of these 2 things makes everyone pay more for goods as retailers have to charge more to compensate for theft losses. This will drive more retailers out of business, especially the mom and pop shops, while it’s good for on-line retailers like AMZN. My 2 cents.

Integrity? This surely is in jest. How about the company stealing from my wife by not paying her what anyone with those sales numbers makes. They're taking $200k at least for themselves. And she goes above and beyond helping the other sales people.

There is no integrity in business, government or life. Churches are diddling kids and just paid money to make it "go away" and you're worried about 0.03% of sales my wife EARNED. You're extremely naivie to think there's an ounce of integrity around you.

Also my role in the household allows my wife to be successful. Her boss pays me more in a day for grilling at company parties than her daily base salary pays. Unless the company hits hard times, he doesn't care and I know him. I just can't talk to him about my wife's pay. That's on her. We're also talking 0.03% and that's just her sales. She's trained all the other ones to sell and it's not a traditional sales style. Because of her, the company owns the whole Mississippi river states sales territory.

This is the classic response we get and I'm used to it. Jealousy of others is a tough pill to swallow. P Diddy. Mo money mo problems. And it's true and we live it. Integrity has different forms. Don't worry about how my life operates and the OWNER knows about us doing it. He just doesn't say anything because he doesn't want to piss off the rainmaker and plant the seed so other salespeople think they can do it.

Has nothing to do with integrity. Own a business and let me know if riding your employees on every little thing works out. You won't have employees....

Here's the problem. THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOING ON!!! I have massive trust issues. Anyone non-family that is close to me I've done background searches on. My kids friends family, I do sex offender searches when they get new friends. I know what half the people we know make and I never asked.

Most people simply are not informed about what is going on around them. While being an insomniac is not pleasant it does give me time to find shit out on people. Also networking/knowing people. I just hung out with the village president last night. Her son came over to our house for a sleep over. Know the people that pull the strings. Integrity shouldn't be a word in the dictionary if you know what the fuck is going on. YOU ALL violate integrity and you know it. The hypocrisy is hysterical.
