Contemplating getting into the vinyl game. I have about 200 records, mostly classic rock, but I need a better record player. I have a brand I want, but $500 on a record player is going to get me into trouble. I'm already probably dropping $5k at least on a home theater. Might be $10k.... I'm gonna get myself in trouble with the wife.

Live once. I love the sound of vinyl but it's better stoned. I'm done with that game. I might revisit it, but it's already been 18 months no weed. It will probably be vacation only at this point and I won't have a record player with me.

Ever heard VHS HiFi? Best analogue by far. Some studios recorded with it back in the day but it never caught on. It was like running tape at 30 feet per second (Flying heads).

We had a VHS HiFi deck back in the day. I agree, it was almost as good as CD, but analog. IIRC it was 80 dB channel separation and something comparable for dynamic range. That blew vinyl out of the water even back in the 80's.

I think CD's are awful. Digital blows it away. I've gone to live shows and get audio that's better than studio. Vinyl just has a unique sound that I cannot describe if you have a solid record player and speakers.

Get some studio monitors for digital music. Your world will change. About peed my pants the first time I jammed out on them. A good mix get around you if that makes sense. You hear it like the engineer and band wanted it to sound. Your car or standard speakers cannot replicate it.

I only used VHS for data storage (apart from video, that is).

Au contraire - I've got 7.1 surround with the .1 being 4000 watts of servo bass goodness calibrated with MSO. I also have SACD, but Sony in their greed made it practically un-rippable without a modded PS3, so it's dying on the vine. Everyone (musicians included) are in awe of what I accomplished on a beer budget. It helps being an EE and having a background in signal processing.

Multichannel is sublime. I rent so I can't do ATMOS, but my system still made the low flyby in "Ford vs. Ferrari" turn heads.

I'm talking music. 2 channel L/R. I can't stand subs listening to music. The mix wasn't designed for that in studio when real bands make music. Maybe rap/hip hop. 95% of people just listen on standard speakers. With studio monitors you get the max range of frequency and don't need a sub. Quality headphones are the same. Added subs are for movies for effects, not music in my opinion outside of live music given the acoustics of most venues.

I have a basic 5.1 system now and can't stand music on it. Solid speakers too. That one is designed for movies though. New system in the house will be off the charts. I will never go to a movie theater again. I need to figure out the projector for video though.

I do want a higher end record player though. I have access to hundreds of 45rpm records for cheap. Singles, but still some cool stuff. I work with a guy that does estate sales and I can get some weird vintage shit for next to nothing. I hope to not become a hoarder like him, but I can get some cool old shit and flip it. I'm an old 41 at heart. If I could piss on music somehow it would be about 2010 till now. Absolute shit show.

It's called 'rexxing'. And it was invented by GenX.

It was also decent aerobic exercise, too.
