All AI is, us just an over complicated AdLib game. There's bits of AI that is bleeding edge and a huge leap in technology. But AI is just a blanket word to cover everything that is the latest and greatest Chip and Programming achievements.
AI as it's called is currently being used in cold call telemarketing. I would love to see a study on numbers of deals they were instrumental in closing. And just how far along that process it got, before humans had to take over the sell. Then how many humans are employed to monitor and see the deal through?

I bet human Indians in a call center in Calcutta has a better success rate, with old ladies annoyed by their foreign accent.

It will be agents again. Agents employing other agents, making micropayments to each other using some form of crypto currency. I've heard it will be bitcorn but I sort of doubt that, might be too slow. If you own an agent you only pay for the fraction of the compute it used again, with crypto plus whatever it paid other agents.

That is all without the robots that are going to start taking jobs en masse by the end of the decade. 10-15 years out there will be more robots than humans on the planet.

I've started to use chatGPT, Gemini and co-pilot to assist with my software dev the past 2 months and I'm already at least 10x more productive than I was 6 months ago.

I hesitated to use it like my co-workers were but they kept saying things like, "There is no shame in using it, maga_chaos_monkey", to me and they were right. I have to use it now to keep up. The company I work for purchases licenses for these. Apparently 'training' is turned off.

This is even though I work on building/using our own home-grown AI for our particular biotech needs. I didn't want to start using the 'other stuff', but damn it is that good. We pay for newer versions that aren't exposed to the general public for the most part yet.

This guy has me blocked but still wants to make stupid comments about my posts. I can tell he's not a tech dev. We don't use it to steal others IP like sound, video or cloning websites or software.

If I'm building something and I want to do some obscure thing I've never or rarely done. Related to one or more libraries I'm not very familiar with it will tell me about some lesser known feature that would take all day reading docs to find, assuming I thought there was something to find. Not only that it'll give me other options and even show me ways to test.

If that fails it'll help me find out why it didn't work with further instruction and example test steps to take. It's really amazing.

In fact, just this week I was speaking with an RND bioinformatician at our company and he told me the bench scientists have all but stopped going to them asking questions, they are getting their data analyzed and questions answered with AI.

I don't think this is a horse and buggy vs. automobile scenario. I don't think H1Bs are going to be around much longer either.

Apart from answering simple questions fairly precisely where you would have to sleuth through stackoverflow or other forums before and IDE code completion suggestions where it's both fairly good at I don't see how this is going to replace anyone, except for maybe very clear repetitive tasks such as writing tests against a library or fetching lookup data from various sources and packaging them nicely.

It's just the start and if I made it sound like autocomplete I failed... All of these are moving along like Moore's law. Primarily so far chatGPT is the most impressive.

I'm not really supposed to but I ask it all sort of other stuff, like issues I'm having with my saltwater coral marine tank. It does a bang up job. Like if I'm battling chrysophytes (which is something new spreading in the community and few real solutions) and I don't want to use GFO (because I want the phosphates) it will even recommend some products... It's clear it is skimming websites like reef2reef.com though. But it goes beyond that and makes logical extensions etc. So far it claims to not know who I am other than that I like terraform - which I don't. It probably thinks I'm the devops guy who set it up.

Before Trump came along and Google decided to destroy itself compared to it's PreTrump glory.
Finding examples and snippets of code I needed was super easy. I usually needed a tip on how to use a library that 99% of the usecase out there didn't do. There were never examples of what I was looking for. So I would have to narrow my search just the task in the code I was trying to achieve. Where that bit of code was being used in another way than I was using it. The Google result would yield hundreds of hits. Now you're lucky if there is a hit, and it's one of those bots that took one answer, then decided it was the consensus way of doing it. Then they would plug it in to hundreds of pages that referenced the same answer, from defunct forums on a server farm somewhere. All of those referencing that one article from Stackoverflow or Codeplex.

Even on Stackoverflow and Codeplex, snippets you find one day, wont be there the next. I think as software companies use that bit of code or example, they lobby those sites to take it down.

Yeah, I mean you can't use it to teach you things after you understand and verify their suggestions, but it cannot code for you, just make you more productive.

The responsibility and fallout would be huge if someone non technical or noob would just take the code given and install it, people routinely get fired for deploying code they found somewhere and don't understand.

Also I predict AI will cause a lot of losses where people are trying to use it for financial advantage such as the stock market as it will frontrun each other and just a bit of deliberately introduced false info on the web could make it go haywire.

Lastly the tech bro isn't wrong about the copyright/patent violations. Don't know of any company that allows their employees to disseminate crucial info to chat gpt or take full code sequences unmodified/unassisted. Still can be a good tool to enhance productivity if used right

Ours does. We had to do a training about NOT doing it with our our own or a public chatGPT and then right after that they signed us up and said go for it! When you pay for it they give you a copy with training turned off. So it doesn't steal any of your data.

That makes sense. Is it expensive? One thing I'm also not sure about is its energy use and hence pricing. Often it needs an enormous amount of data and computation to come a logical conclusion/decision a human can do with far less.

Haha yeah we can hope. I think there will be some job loss where there is a lot of reliance on pattern recognition, like self driving cars, operations (even in IT), and simpler repetitive tasks.

It would be a win win for both countries. Presuming we can get DEI declared unconstitutional, hiring could look more like the 70’s- 90’s. An era that brought us “Silicon Valley” in the first place.

It would also put pressure on American universities and primary/secondary to teach again. Rigor, problem sets, mastery. You wouldn’t believe the garbage my three schoolagers bring home, despite being in “GT” (we supplement, obviously).

None of this is to say there aren’t talented Indians, just that most made their way over here already. We might get one gem for every nine deadweight with H1B these last years.
