That's Rare Earth Elements

A project heralded by Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy and accelerated by President Donald Trump stands to deal a huge blow to China’s dominance in the nanotechnology, energy and automotive sectors as the GraphiteOne site near Nome uncovered vast reserves — for which Beijing previously accounted for 90% of production.

As of 2024, the U.S. was at least 93% import-dependent on both rare earth elements (REEs) and graphite itself, according to the International Energy Agency, and the Graphite Creek deposit has already been dubbed the largest such tranche in the U.S.

But, this week’s announcement that REEs were discovered in addition to the graphite lode portends a step-up that the U.S. can take against the CCP through Trump’s "American energy dominance" agenda, according to a source familiar with the situation.

There are no such thing as REE mines. REEs are the byproduct of other mines, like nickel or copper. Even coal (just opened in Wyoming).

That REEs are in high demand so the mines get renamed REE mines.

It typically takes 7 to 15 years to get a rare earth mine fully operational in the U.S., depending on permitting, environmental reviews, infrastructure, and processing capabilities. The timeline can be shorter if the site repurposes an existing mine or receives fast-track federal support.

Real-World Example: Brook Mine, Wyoming
• Opened July 2025: First U.S. rare earth mine in 70 years.
• Developer: Ramaco Resources repurposed a former coal site near Ranchester.
• Timeline: Took ~5 years from initial exploration to ribbon-cutting, aided by existing infrastructure and federal support.
• Output: Contains six of the 17 rare earth elements; projected to supply U.S. needs for 150 years.

⚠️ Challenges That Slow Down U.S. Rare Earth Projects
• Environmental scrutiny: Rare earth mining can produce radioactive waste and toxic byproducts.
• Community opposition: Local resistance can delay or block permits.
• Processing bottlenecks: The U.S. lacks domestic refining capacity, often relying on China for final separation.
• Capital intensity: Projects require hundreds of millions in upfront investment.

Pretty damn far and cold, but at least it's US territory.

I remember throwing down quite a bit of money on a rare earth mining stock out west featured on “60 Minutes” 15-20 years ago only to watch it go down the drain. Nice pump and dump! Thanks “60 Minutes” for another of the never ending lies!

If it's on TV, it's way too late already.

First REE magnet made in the United States - South Carolina - in 25 years…

800 construction jobs, 300 factory jobs — and the plant could go to 3,000.”

I'm so calling them REE Magnets now.

Let’s hope they hire Americans and not illegals like that one factory Biden touted.
