My only reason for being interested in a house is so that I can get a garage and fill it with tools. I happen to love woodworking and car projects, and anyone that rents knows that it can be really difficult to find a place that is OK with that. So, rather than spend a hideous amount of money on interest every month to have a garage (or a lot on rent), I'd like to know if there are any places I can maybe pay a membership fee at to go use tools & facilities for projects? I have heard about the Tech Shop, but it is a little bit of a pain in the ass to get up to during weekdays. Does anyone know of anything like that around Mountain View / Sunnyvale?

My other solution is to rent a storage space or some sort of workshop space & do stuff there. I just worry about having my tools stolen, and the ones I want are not inexpensive!

Thanks!

Good for you. This was exactly my argument in this thread:

I'm sorry that I do not have a recommendation for you. One option I've used before myself is universities -- they often have awesome shops. Sometimes finding the right person who can help you out with this is difficult.

Another good place to scour would be community colleges -- one of them might have an auto shop class or a wood working class, and may make their facilities available for enthusiasts as well. If not, you can enroll in the class, and just blow off the class, essentially.

Hmm, good idea. I'll check with some of the local education facilities. Foothill College is pretty close & not hard to get to after work.
