The union is supporting themerger because if it goes through, AT&T said they would bring back 5,000 call center jobs to the U.S. But don't beleive for a second any of those jobs will retuin.

The 5000 call center jobs are just the first promise. The much bigger promise is a very precise 95,959 jobs created when ATT/CWA - TMobile tower up 97% of the US for 4G wireless service. Presumably, 4G doesn't happen without the merger.

This is from ATT/CWA's propaganda site:

I don't think there's any way this merger will increase the total number of telecom jobs, any more than any other merger has created jobs, but I'm sure ATT/CWA has it all figured out.
The mergers must continue until everybody's happy.
Because, you know, every time other cell phone companies have merged, we've gotten better service, cheaper prices, and no one lost their jobs. I can't believe they let this clown lead the union. Somehow Verizon vs. AT&T (Sprint is already a goner) will create more competition and better infrastructure, yeah right.
The fundamental problem I see, is that there'll be only one GSM provider if they let them merge.

Sure, it's all BS. CWA gets bigger after the merger, no pity for the redundant workers kicked out to the street. AT&T gets an effective duopoly with Verizon.
It's completely unclear to me why rural broadband NEEDS this merger. But there are plenty of politicians who say that's why the merger should be approved.
But it is clear that as competition decreases, the need for regulation increases. More contributions for the Republicrat party!

Agreed. That seems like the most bullshit rationale. I would love an explanation for that one.
In testimony before a Senate Judiciary committee, Communication Workers of America President Larry Cohen said:
The merger "will create tremendous economic opportunity by accelerating the deployment of high-speed broadband across the country, it will increase jobs and economic development in rural America, and it will positively impact consumers and competition,"
Cohen's capitalist cohort, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, claimed:
"Output will continue to rise, prices will continue to fall, new companies will continue to enter, all of these competitors will continue to wage fierce marketing campaigns to attract and retain customers, and the U.S. wireless marketplace will remain the most competitive in the world."
