How so?

What's the difference between insulting someone who is ignoring you vs not?

Both are not allowed anyway.
527   The_Deplorable   2024 Dec 17, 5:26pm

Question: If you started a thread, is it possible for you to go back and edit the title?

Thanks.
528   Patrick   2024 Dec 17, 5:33pm

@The_Deplorable

Sure, just click "edit" under the title. There should be an edit link for you for any threat you start.

My bigger question is what 10 people did I personally insult to warrant an ignore? I can tell you they just log back on under a burner or at least look at what you're posting. I know we have some religious people here and I swear a lot. I frankly don't understand how that is so offensive.

There's no way I've personally attacked 10 people on this site. Maybe 2-3 in a fit of anger. You can't change for the better if you just put blinders on and say it's my way or the highway. DOGE has pissed me off a ton. He also has good takes that I wouldn't have heard if I ignored him. Disagreement is good. There's an entire profession for it that pays well... lawyers.

There are plenty of people in the world I don't want to hear from, but even if they're right 2% of the time I want to hear it. Ignore is like TDS on steroids regardless of the topic.

No insults. They just don't want to hear your point of view.
532   Patrick   2024 Dec 17, 6:52pm

True, that happens.

Happens to me with my own relatives sometimes.

@The_Deplorable Is the post more than a week old? I have a rule in the code that a thread more than a week old cannot be edited or deleted.

Maybe I should change that.

I'm just saying that supplying a list of "enemies" would not be conducive to discussing points instead of insulting people.

The goal is to argue about issues we might be able to influence instead of attacking each other personally. From 20 some years of doing this, I know that personal insults are instant death for productive debate.

@Patrick: If it can be done easily then please do. This, in my thinking, could prove to
be an advantage for Patrick.net because as time goes on, topics grow and we can
make the topic of a thread more inclusive by editing the title of the thread. In other
words there is no need to start another thread with a similar topic.

Yeah but they still can do a burner account and take a shit on your thread or comment under a different username. Users for sure have done that. They get to run and hide and then throw shit at us? Just talk shit to me. Why I don't like the name change thing either I've bitched about.

Not bitching at DOGE, just making an example. We've not seen eye to eye on everything. Whatever. But we're in agreement on things. That wouldn't happen if him or I just ignored each other. So NO conversation happens.

Outside of booting bots, I'm not a fan of the ignore feature. Your site, just input. I'm okay not seeing who ignored me, but maybe remove the feature though. Self ignore. I manually ignore a lot of users here. It's called being an adult and moving on from a bad take.

I go after @socal2 even though I figured out he has me on ignore. I attack his bullshit, not him tho.

@The_Deplorable OK, done.

Any thread author should now be able to edit the text of the original post at any time.

Let me know if you have any trouble editing a thread you created.
539   Patrick   2024 Dec 18, 2:01pm

But it's still not allowed to delete a thread that is more than a week old, because people make a lot of comments, and then those comments would become very hard to find if the original thread got deleted. You'd have to look in a specific user's comments to find one from a deleted thread.

542   MolotovCocktail   2024 Dec 22, 5:07pm

If posting this:

...somehow drives new users away. Then what the hell will pretty much everything else posted here will do?

It's fantasy delusion to think that meme will drive ppl away. Or rather, if it does, then all the rest will too. So what? Welcome to PatNet! Or any other site for that matter?
543   Patrick   2024 Dec 22, 5:21pm

Telling new users that we will all "laugh at you" is just about the worst possible welcome imaginable.

Apparently, what I see on this site is not the same as what you do.

Put yourself in the place of a new user.

Would anyone want to post anywhere he has been told he will be instantly laughed at?

I am putting myself in the place of someone who is very aware of what new users are going to see on this site sooner or later.

I am shocked that you don't.

And if they are such a snowflake where something like that will drive them away in that thread, they will be dropping off anyway.

Want me to go and cherry pick something from the Latest Images thread to make my point? I mean, c'mon. This is common sense, Patrick.

547   Patrick   2024 Dec 22, 5:37pm

I disagree.

Being told you will be mocked is the worst possible introduction to the site.

To greet new users with insults is nothing other than actively trying to kill this site.

Don't do that. Be welcoming to the person. Then attack points, never people.

1) The meme is a joke.
2) This is exactly how Leftists react to memes.
3) If they can't see (1) and react to it as (2), they won't be long for this site anyway.
4) 1, 2, & 3 are just common sense derived from knowing what is on this site and what people described in 2 will react thereby.

But you're the boss, Patrick.

So, I'll skip the New Users thread from here on out. I can't guarantee how they react to what else I post. Or what Booger or Ceffer or Wookieman posts. Snowflakes are gonna flake, after all.

BlueSky comes to PatNet! But Booger said it best:

What's with me? Too much swearing or bad takes? I have no issue with feedback. I will hit submit and then I move on about my day and don't think of Patnet at all. Have to have thick skin on internet forums of any kind. I just spew a 50/50 vomit of truth and unacknowledged bull shit that I think is true.
550   AmericanKulak   2025 Feb 3, 3:10pm

Expand the New Threads daily limit for the next 30 days.

There is just TOO MUCH WINNING
551   Patrick   2025 Feb 3, 4:57pm

@AmericanKulak

OK, I bumped up the threads per day limit from 7 to 10. I'm a little worried about going higher because people could flood the home page.
552   WookieMan   2025 Feb 3, 6:25pm

I'd suggest stopping double and quadruple commenting in multiple threads with the same meme/image. Just post it where you want to make a point and call it a day. It's kind of retarded for people to do that.
553   Patrick   2025 Feb 3, 7:26pm

@WookieMan Can you show me an example of that?

Sometimes I'll re-post something about a Congressman in the dedicated thread for that guy if I find him mentioned in a different thread. Just so that everything about that guy can be looked up in one place.

DOGE posted this in at least 3-4 threads. I'll try to grab the links.

Multiple others. Pretty sure some were deleted after my comment. It was 4 at least. The rare earth minerals meme.

Thanks! Because some days there are over 7 excellent Trump moves.

Just for the first few months, maybe, Pat. Then knock it back down.

I do quotes, not 'multiple posts'. Wookie has a real problem understanding the difference, however.

And they are in already established threads mostly. Because I bother to try and find existing threads before I create a new one.

Wookie likes to bitch about screenshots and memes, too.
561   Patrick   2025 Feb 4, 8:15am

I don't see real duplication, just quotes.

Patrick says

Exactly.

^^^^ @WookieMan

The real problem is that ppl are too lazy to check if a thread for a topic already exists. So we end up with multiple threads of the same topic. Especially recently.
563   WookieMan   2025 Feb 4, 10:17am

Patrick says

I don't see real duplication, just quotes.

The meme image is duplicated 3 times, doesn't matter if it was quoted. Not sure what's hard to understand here. He made a comment with the same image 3 times on 3 different threads. If people want to read it they can follow it. The site is becoming unusable with all the images and screen shots and image.

Maybe don't allow duplicate threads then? There's plenty of those. The image was in 3 different threads. Go post it on another site I guess?

I've requested this before before, you should be able to ignore shitty and repeatative threads. Not the people but the individual thread itself. Put ignore by the pin, NSFW and flag line. The same image does not need to be put on 3 different posts with the same topic. It would be nice to ignore repeated stuff. Covid is a biggie here.

Or have a way to merge threads. The duplication or even 10x's the same topic gets annoying. I have other ideas but it involves more development that's probably not reasonable.

I won't ever leave the site, but posting (quoting... eye roll) is childish on 3 threads I could find. I know there were more. Just post a comment on one thread or 4th grade image on a thread and call it a day.
