I blame the media for creating these monsters, with non stop media coverage. Our youth are living pointless lives, locked away in their bedrooms in quiet desperation practicing for this very day on Violent video games, that the Army uses to train tactical combat forces.

The constant bombardment of hopelessness, high tuition costs, lower wages, lack of jobs available for college grads, the likelihood that they will be renters for life with nothing in the bank to show for their efforts at Dunkin Doughnut mine.

Just look at the attention these shooters get, they are treated like national heros that accomplished impossible feats and goals.

The flack I've gotten in the last hour, will be more outrage than the World's collective outrage over the shooter.

You guys should apologize for being so damn narcissistic.

Says the person who has to make the post about himself.

Oh, Shaddup don't get me wrong. You are a vile, disgusting, person lacking in empathy and seemingly unable to understand (evidenced by quoted comment) or fit in to the society around you, but I find people like Richard Allen Davis far more abhorrent than you. I am not even going to joke and say that you are just a notch above.

Yes if we could just not talk about the monsters, maybe they would cease to exist....

Or at least, we won't have to have an uncomfortable (for you) conversation about prevention.

How so? Why would it be uncomfortable for me? I'm not a gun man.

But it would be pointless with out a national effort to pad every blunt object in the world, and filing down every sharp object to a smooth edge.

See, this is truth of your argument.

You want to belittle the people who are outraged over the lack of gun control and want a sensible conservation.

This is the truth. This is a right wing wedge issue. Death by Gun.

You work for the gun lobby?

You are evil!

Yeah but if some dude from the "hood" to the east not too far away from alameda knew for a fact that there's no chance that anyone in alameda had a gun, don't you think it would increase robberies and perhaps worse in your town?

Well, maybe in some cases. But I'm pretty convinced that overall countries with strict gun control are safer than countries without. Its a waste of time talking about, because an extremely motivated segment of the population has decided that they will never accept limits on gun ownership. In fact, they have stockpiled guns and announce that they will defy the law if the majority of voters try to change the laws to restrict access to guns.

Norway is much, much safer than the US. One of the reasons (certainly not the only one, but an important one) is that they have stricter gun laws.

Huh?

you can read...
this is not Norway, this was the murder of 22+ innocent young children at a school, this was not political unlike that of the shooting in Norway you invoked as a false comparison.

96   Bellingham Bill   2012 Dec 14, 5:11am

As a point of fact, the Norway shooter acquired his guns legally in Norway.

That is not "gun control".

Norway is safer because they are a fantastically wealthy nation.

Their pension fund has $150,000 PER CAPITA in it, and this isn't bullshit government issues into a 'trust fund', it's the real deal of 2-3% of the global stock equity.

97   Peter P   2012 Dec 14, 5:14am

The gun laws in Norway are less restrictive than most European countries, but MUCH, MUCH, MUCH stricter than anything that would ever be acceptable here.

Bellingham Bill says

Well, that's your interpretation. I see countries with stricter gun laws and less violence, and I happen to think there is a connection. A causal connection. And I see a lot of people here in the US with creepy gun fetishes that just don't want to believe it.

Sure, I don't deny that. There's a basic rate of street crime, which availability of concealable guns increases.

Then there's these mass shooting incidents, which have nothing to do with street crime at all, and gun control cannot address unless we actually restrict hunting and recreational firearms drastically.

The Tides shooter from a couple of years back is a good example of gun control working. This nut had firearms he could legally acquire, but couldn't outgun the CHP since they weren't of "assault" variety.

101   BoomAndBustCycle   2012 Dec 14, 5:32am

The fact is, it's much easier to pull the trigger of a gun and close your eyes like a coward... then it is to stab and kill someone.

Both are sick individuals.. but the one stabbing people can be stopped much easier and quicker. I always wonder why the death counts are so low with guns... I'm curious if around the 28th person dead the gunman starts to feel remorse.

Or if they just run out of ammo... Personally i think it's the semi-automatic and automatic weapon reform is what we need. If the guy had to actually RELOAD his gun.. it would atleast give people time to tackle him.

Pipe bombs and such are another matter altogether.. and i sadly suspect the day any ban on semi-automatic weapons occurs.. some whack-job gun nut will pull a large scale Timothy McVeigh bombing just to prove a point.

If and when actually criminals.. not lone-gunman lunatics.. start committing mass shootings.. then we can talk about reversing the semi-automatic laws. How bout we pass a gun law... with an out clause.. where if everything the NRA fears will happen.. starts happening.. then we revert back to the way things were.

102   Indiana Jones   2012 Dec 14, 5:34am

Guns are evil when used against innocent beings. In an ideal world, there would be no guns. That being said, guns are one of the only "powers" that the masses of people still have in America. Every other avenue of power is gone- economic, (job loss& foreclosure) political (corruption, lobbying by big $$) religious (hierarchical structure with masses at the bottom tithing the few dollars they have away). Although today is absolutely tragic, the remedy is not to take all the guns away from the people. Unfortunately, in this day and age, the people need guns to be able to defend themselves, just in case.

103   Peter P   2012 Dec 14, 5:34am

You need to uninvent guns, not to outlaw them.

Murder is already illegal.

Well, if you are ready to concede that strict gun control would in fact save lives then there's really nothing left to discuss on that...

*gasp* restrict hunting and recreational firearms? Saving lives can't POSSIBLY be worth giving up something so important as recreational use of firearms!

As I've said, it will never happen. But it should.

The NRA needs to go to Connecticut and offer free assault weapon safety classes in maternity hospitals so that parents can get the kind of education they need to teach their kids to defend themselves against the inevitability of mass murderers descending upon their schools and playgrounds. It's not Free Americans fault that parents are irresponsible.

I never liked your sarcasm. Especially on days like this. You should find better ways of communicating.

Why don't you go jump in a hole and bury yourself. You opinions are a disgrace to this country.

Comprehensive gun control is required and further more psych evaluations should be made mandatory, prescription drug use should be monitored just like they give cops so they can carry guns.

Of course you have no response CptEvil or Shrek (call you crazy)

Gun availability/violence link is not that simple. For instance, in mexico, gun ownership is officially illegal. Yet there's a lot of violence in that country that's fueled by drug cartels. Cuidad Juarez is basically a warzone. Also, while in europe gun ownership is much stricter than here, it does not mean at all that people are safe. For example, there are neighborhoods where you have teenage and young adult thugs (ahem "disaffected youth") that terrorize the passerbies, beat them, steal etc. Sure having gun control would mean that sensationalized violence such as school, movie theater shootings would be reduced but it does not mean that society would be safer overall. There needs to be a balance, a delicate balance that is tough to find where we find the most aggregate safety at the least overall aggregate cost. I don't believe that banning guns will accomplish this. We need to have a situation where a potential criminal will have seeds of doubt in their mind before they committ a violent act that a potential victim may be armed. I remember in oakland 2 or 3 summers back there were businesses that were robbed almost every day. I thought that the only way this would end would be when one of these punk motherfuckers would be shot do death. And that's exactly what happened. A couple of these guys tried to hold up a jewerly store and one of them got popped. All of a sudden the epidemic stopped.

112   lostand confused   2012 Dec 14, 6:38am

That and also, this phenomenon of mass shootings seems to be somewhat new. While going postal has been part of our lexicon, after Columbine - it has accelerated. There are so many frigging mass shootings in all sorts of states -I really don't know why.

It is almost like you can't go a month or two without hearing of a mass shooting. If this had happened in a mall with adults, this would not even have garnered this much publicity. Really sad.

113   121212   2012 Dec 14, 6:41am

This is just more liberal naive from you. Way more people die in car accidents, ban cars too. And if you own an SUV stronger rules should apply.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. And it happens a lot less when economy is not going down the toilet like it is in the Obama lets raise taxes on the wealthy and everyone else nation.

And stupid liberal media, which seems to give these thugs way too much attention is probably just aggravating the problem.
