"The gun ban had an unintended effect: It emboldened criminals because they knew that law-abiding District residents were unarmed and powerless to defend themselves. Violent crime increased after the law was enacted, with homicides rising to 369 in 1988, from 188 in 1976 when the ban started. By 1993, annual homicides had reached 454."

...

"Since the gun ban was struck down, murders in the District have steadily gone down, from 186 in 2008 to 88 in 2012, the lowest number since the law was enacted in 1976. The decline resulted from a variety of factors, but losing the gun ban certainly did not produce the rise in murders that many might have expected."

Wow - what a bunch of unbridled bullshit. So what the author is trying to say - gun ban goes in place, homicides spike - gun ban relaxed, homicides drop.

For anyone with half a brain - here is the year by year homicide results in DC

Year - Number
70 - 221
71 - 275
72 - 245
73 - 268
74 - 277
75 - 235
76 - 188 (gun ban enacted, large DROP in homicides)
77 - 189
78 - 180
79 - 192
80 - 200
81 - 223
82 - 194
83 - 183
84 - 175
85 - 147
86 - 194
87 - 225 (decent spike in murders, gun ban in place)
88 - 369 (massive spike in murders, gun ban in place)
89 - 434 (massive spike in murders, gun ban in place)
90 - 472 (another spike in murders, gun ban in place)
91 - 482 (peak of murders, gun ban in place)
92 - 443 (small drop in murders, gun ban in place)
93 - 454 (small rise in murders, gun ban in place)
94 - 399 (decent drop in murders, gun ban in place)
95 - 360 (decent drop in murders, gun ban in place)
96 - 397 (small rise in murders, gun ban in place)
97 - 301 (MASSIVE DROP in murders, gun ban in place)
98 - 260 (another decent DROP in murders, gun ban in place)
99 - 241 (yet another DROP in murders, gun ban in place)
00 - 239
01 - 231
02 - 264
03 - 249
04 - 198 (yet another MASSIVE DROP in murders, gun ban in place)
05 - 193
06 - 169 (least murders in 35+ years, gun ban in place)
07 - 181
08 - 186 (slight rise, GUN BAN OVERTURNED)
09 - 145
10 - 132
11 - 108
12 - 88

If this guy is right, why did homicides both MASSIVELY SPIKE (1985 - 1991), and MASSIVELY DROP (1991 - 2006) while the gun ban was in place?

Seems to me, the better explanation is the gun ban, maybe (and I stress maybe) caused a large DROP in homicides, in 1976 when it was enacted, but otherwise, it did jackshit.

Best explanation I ever heard for the massive spike and then drop was the crack cocain epidemic of the late 1980s. The stats do seem to bear this out. Otherwise, it looks like DC is just cointinuing on a 20+ year trend of a drop in homicides, and the gun ban (or no gun ban) had little to do with it.

Dewalts answer to home protection that doesn't require a registration or license. This nail gun can shoot a 16-D nail through a 2x4 at 200 yards and in case of a home invasion well you can NAIL THEIR ASS to the wall. Im not saying it wont kill the perp but they wont get away. You can also help build a friends fence 2 blocks away while sitting in your front lawn. This is truly how you adapt and overcome so Thanks Dewalt.
Think you hit the nail Right on the head with this one

Thanks for the data. It would also be interesting to see results from other cities over the same time period who did not change any gun laws.

When they prohibited alcohol, it also took a few years before crime started really ramping up. Ironically repealed the same way as this DC gun ban, when violence got out of hand and mafia was making money from black market sales hand over fist.

crack cocaine.... really??? That's the reason??? No other possible reason?? Really??

Again, I said it was the "best" explanation I heard, not "no other possible reason".

Then again, based on your response (and the fact that you conflated my argument from "best" to "only"), it sounds like you dispute this explanation. If so, tell us what you think caused that massive spike, and drop 1987-1998?

I would buy that, but for the fact that there was a 11 year delay before homicides started ramping up. Secondly, if (as the author alleges) homices started ramping up when the ban started, why did it drop by over half while the gun ban was still in place?

Again, what we know is (a) the gun ban was in place from 1976-2008 and (b) a massive spike and then a massive drop from 1987-1998. If the answer was "THE GUN BAN" we would expect to see a pretty linear trend from the start of the gun ban to the end of the gun ban. Instead, we see a massive spike and drop right in the middle of the gun ban which doesnt fit the narrative.
