As ugly and despicable as the right is, it does not have a monopoly on ugliness. Recently, a successful female Princeton graduate, Susan Patton -- one of the first women to attend Princeton, by the way -- recently wrote a short, honest letter in which she advocated that Princeton women follow a long-term dating strategy in college rather than a short-term stating strategy. Patton argues that college is the best time for women to secure a husband and that who a woman marries will be instrumental in her happiness.

Of course, everything Patton said is undeniably true. College is the time in which both men and women have access to the greatest pool of eligible mates with similar interests and life situations, with the freedom to live anywhere, and the least emotional, financial, and physical baggage.

It is also indisputably true that mate selection is one of the most important, if not the most important, decision a man or woman will ever, ever make in his or her life. A happy marriage makes for a far better life than a miserable one. And as indicated the sheer ferociousness of the mating market, competition for high quality mates is extremely high for both straight men and women. (I would think that such competition would also be extremely high in homosexual and bisexual mating markets, but I'll leave that for another thread.) Not that being single can't be great, but even then, your family is an essential part of your life. If you do get married, that doesn't become less true.

So, Susan Patton advices that women at Princeton consider shifting from "playing the field" (short-term strategy) to "looking for a husband" (long-term strategy). Now, one can argue whether or not Patton is correct. There are many trade-offs in life including marrying young when your options are vast or waiting until your older and your options are limited to what's left over or in the secondary market. There are various pros and cons, and I'm sure this thread will spawn a discussion on those pros and cons and well as the nature of Patton's advice.

However, before we get to that, I would like to point out the utterly unacceptable behavior of the far left which seeks to silence the very discussion of this topic by making personal attacks on Patton and by making dumb Straw Man arguments including the false dichotomy that either a woman of college age must be completely disinterested in husband selection or she is forever doomed to live in the 1950s.

Such arguments and attacks show an irrational opposition to even listening to a discussion that creates a bubble around the left that is essentially the same as the bubble the right lives in. No facts, no ideas, no truth can get inside that bubble. And those living in the bubble must preserve the integrity of that bubble, no matter what the cost.

The letter Susan Patton wrote to The Daily Princetonian

By the way, doesn't Princetonian remind you of Praetorian? Or is that just me?

what happened... The Contras won... so much for Ortega and his thugs!

Freedom won! enjoy it!

Yea, and I'm not surprised that you didn't prove it. Oh, you might want to head over to your beloved wikipedia and find out who won in the end. I probably shouldn't bust on your (wikipedia)knowledge of the subject because you were probably not even in high school yet.

your incapable of understanding/accepting that many US citizens supported the Contras even if the media did not. the liberals in the US of course were dumbfounded as you as their world view came crashing with the fall of Sandinista, Berlin Wall and USSR. Too bad for your kind.

the pathetic Socialist world doesnt exist any longer... it ended in 1989 !

Yea, that explains why Reagan had to support the contras, which was the old Somoza brutal and corrupt national guard, not only illegally, but behind congress and the American people's back. And, when the Sandinista were VOTED out, it was because those same Sandinistas set up the election system and had the first ever election in the country.

Reagan also took some flack over the numerous outright lies that he spewed to support the old savages of Somoza, including a gem that I had the unfortunate sake of being part of in 1988.

I was right before about you being full of shit AND stupid, because you have absolutely no CLUE what government is in charge now, and the election was overseen by various international groups for it's legitimacy, and a former Sandinista is back in charge.

Which Ortega is in charge today ? ... the power hungry Communist making a deal with Cuba and Soviets or just another politician who has to earn his vote and accept free market capitalism... there is no Commandante Ortega or any revolutions to be won today.... and he certainly doesnt carry any clear majority. He too will pass of old age..

You know, if you're going to try and squeak out some nickels for being a really crappy propagandist, you might consider brushing up on your english skills. The crappy sentences that don't make any sense may work for posting stupid one-liners on yahoo articles, but not here where you have to post something coherent.

Then, explain this

You don't judge the beliefs of other people in a negative way because you're so humble and all ideas have merit. Right? That's total bullshit. Counter-example: Tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of Islamic men in the Middle East, deeply and religiously believe that it is a moral imperative to honor kill a woman in their family if she has had sex with a man who isn't her husband, even if the woman was raped.

Tell me that you "respect" that belief. It's a deeply held, religious conviction from another culture. Are you saying you would tolerate honor killings out of respect for these men's beliefs? I don't think that you are that fucked up. And the only alternative is that you are engaging in politically correct bullshitting.

And that's just one counter-example. I could provide an infinite number of others, but only one is necessary, and this is a very real world, non-academic example that greatly impacts peoples lives right now. It is cowardly and wrong to ignore such atrocities simply to make yourself more acceptable to other people. Grow a backbone and stand up for human rights even if it means pissing off some assholes with shitty beliefs that happen to be religious beliefs. You can't make any positive impact on the world without pissing somebody off.

In this classic Dan8267 post, I, the most liberal person on patrick.net, go head to head with a non-liberal leftist, Marcus, on the very issue that your cartoon ridiculous.

Sorry, your cartoons might make some people laugh, but they simply don't reflect reality as I demonstrated in that old thread.

As for abortion, both pro-choice and pro-life are marketing bullshit. The pro-life side is no more "pro-life" than the pro-choice side is "pro-choice". And most people don't fall into either categories.

By the way, I have already resolved the abortion issue. If you have anything new to add, do so in that old thread I opened. Just look at my thread history to find it.

Thing is Linus can chose all these things. Smoking, Guns, and Belief in the Invisible SkyDaddy are all legal. Large Sodas may not be an option in NY, but neither is buying Gas by the liter. You can still drink 32oz. cokes, you just have to buy 2 16oz. sodas.

(assuming he means ridicules)

I saw this from another browser and can't help but comment. He's right, that was classic Dan. That entire blocked quote was a response to my saying this:

"Yes, I'm careful about what I believe and the ways in which I judge what others believe. That's just my nature.

Classic indeed. Classic ! He got all of that from that one little sentence.

In other words, Marcus continues to use another browser to stalk the people he claims to Ignore. Creepy, crazy, and the worst sort of childish. His false accusations and tantrums including profanity do illustrate an occasional ugliness of the left, though his comments aren't really about anyone other than himself.

I.e., I want people to know that the real reason I don't respond to most of Dan's comments is that I haven't read them because he's on my ignore list. It's certainly not because I have no intelligent answer.

Of course, when I do feel respond to Dan it's because I was using a "different browser" which I do because, ..., because, ..., look a bear! Where was I? Oh yeah, Dan sucks.

Hey, creepy, stalker dude using a different browser. Now that you got your jollies pointing out my typo -- oh the humanity -- how about you and zzyzzx fight it out. I can't be both an anti-Islam hating bigot and an Muslim appeasing terrorist hugging hippie. They are kind of mutually exclusive, which was the point of my referencing the old discussion with the new one.

Liberals don't tolerate injustices and crimes against humanity simply because someone's bigoted hatred has a religious basis. That's what leftists do. That's why I'm always reminding the neo-cons the difference between liberalism and leftism. The like to use the terms interchangeably. They are not.
