I love Half Moon Bay! Will check it out, for same or less cash, much better to live close to the ocean. Plus not invaded by Chindians either :-)
I heard that Santa Mountain area is very affordable. I'm not sure what parts or if it was in Santa Cruz county. The intern at UCSF said that his friends parents had to reduce the price of their home.
area is very affordable.
It's cheap for a reason so is expensive. Everything in life has a price.

Not necessarily, in fact often spending more on something can yield more grief than joy. Want an example? Try spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a Ferrari only to have it always in the shop. You can spend hundreds of dollars on a single bottle of wine you may like even less than a ten dollars bottle. Home A/V equipment is another money sink where higher prices may not correlate with added value. You can spend millions of dollars to buy into a neighborhood where you still have to put up with homeless sifting through your trash, neighbors with barky dogs, loud airplanes, fags with loud motorcycles (southpark definition), and a house with decades of deferred maintainence.
More money does not equal value.
How are prices right now for Santa Rosa and Petaluma? I've thought of buying up there instead of Sacramento as it is far nicer and cheaper I think than Palo Alto, Mountain View, or Sunnyvale. I can deal with 1x commute to Santa Clara.
