Got this in my email today. Some sort of anti Monsanto petition... I know what Monsanto is. But never heard of this "Protection Act" before... Is this real or a hoax?

Most of it has to do with who controls the rights to the crops etc.

Correction: patents.

Unless I am reading things wrong, Monsanto can and are suing farmers for use
of Genetically Modified seeds, if over 1% of a crop is affected regardless of
how the contamination occurred and a farmer has not gotten prior authorization
from them to use the seeds in an effort to protect their patent rights.

They used to but it's not much of an issue now, they've managed to make their point and run the small guys out of business while sending their message, and most of them were too small to contribute much anyway. They cost more than what they contributed.
Bulk seed buying by the big timers is what really counts and big M's traits are beginning to under-perform when price/value is evaluated. That, and weed resistance to their chemicals along with a very large chunk of corn that goes to the ethanol plants or to Miss River terminals for export anyway, with a large chunk of soybeans heading to China. S. America has surpassed the USA in soybean production, and might hurt the corn production in the very near future. If they ever get a distrobution network or highway system in place, it's over because of prices, and cost(and of course, subsidies).
Since the crop insurance program has been instituted with the government paying 62% of the premium, there's no risk hardly and definitely little incentive to improve farming practices or change considering the average farmer age is just over 60 y/o. That and the fact that 12% of the roughly 2.1 million farmers produce 84% of the output. The bottom half of the number 2 corn producing state, Illinois, a large number of farmers survive on crop insurance payments because of the weather and poor soils.
But it's a boon for the 17 companies that provide that crop insurance with the most notable one being owned by the "official" farm representative organization, the American Farm Bureau. Just remember that when you hear their favorite and redundant propaganda line..........that they serve "family farms". Well, mostly the corporate ones anyway.

I think in Germny it is Monsanto/GM farms responsibility to not to let their seed blow in to your field??

Here looks like it is the farmer's responsibility not to let anything blow in his field.May be they expect him to erect a star ship type force field in his farm?
