The CNN list contains some seriously bad news. Just going alphabetically through the list, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the EEOC, the FCC, the National Science Foundation, and many more are mostly or totally shutting down. The WSJ reports even more alarming news, that the CDC will mostly shut down:

"Better hope for no big outbreaks of hepatitis A, salmonella, or flu if the federal government shuts down.

A government shutdown will furlough 68% of staff – meaning 8,754 people — at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a fiscal year 2014 “Contingency Staffing Plan for Operations in the Absence of Enacted Annual Appropriations” on the Department of Health and Human Services’ website."

It's almost unbelievable that this is happening. So far, I'm glad that people can still joke about it, but I hope the impasse gets resolved before anything terrible goes wrong.

Whatever, it's all horseshit.

They should start with the IRS and the FHA, then we can talk about whether or not any of this matters.

Those won't shut down. Most of HUD will shut down, but FHA will continue processing loans.

The impasse is ostensibly about Obamacare, which also won't shut down. I hope enough people might suggest that should be put to a November referendum instead. I haven't seen either party making that suggestion, and I suspect the reason is because (a) Democrats know it would lose and (b) for Republicans, Obamacare is only the excuse for a shutdown, and the shutdown itself is the goal.

I'm concerned over the shutdown of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.

How will this country survive without these people there to assure that financial crimes are fully enforced?

I imagine the furloughed Republican are enthusiastic to have unpaid leave.Maybe they will be able to vacation for an extended period. This probably guarantees reelection for Reps.because their voters don't know any better.

When they come to an agreement there's a good chance the politicians back-pay themselves ;)
