I don't believe it is ingrained in the Hispanic culture to rise to the top. They could very well be comfortable performing average work and not have a desire for more. Or they may not believe it's something they can achieve. Growing up my family never spoke to me about college or someday becoming a doctor. My kids friends who are either Asian or Middle Eastern all talk about their families wanting them to become Doctors when they grow up. My culture was never that driven. Americans in general are not that driven. That's why we have a shortage of native born Doctors and Engineers in this country.

Pretty sure that's not true. I believe California specifically breaks out test scores for Filipinos as opposed to other Asians sometimes, and they are generally a bit lower (which is why they're broken into a special category in the first place).

I randomly picked an East Bay high school and Filipinos were 50 points below other Asians at that one (California High).

Vietnamese is trickier and not a monolithic group because there are multiple ethnic groups within Vietnam. The Kinh (whom we'd consider ethnically "Vietnamese") are the largest, obviously, but there are also smaller groups who have made their way to the US like the Hmong.

Technically Chinese isn't monolithic either because obviously, there are more ethnic groups than Han Chinese in China, but most of the Chinese here are probably Han. The same is true for India. For example, many of the people in the Himalayan areas and Northeast India are more Tibetan-looking than Indian-looking and their languages come from Sino-Tibetan families rather than Indo-European (Indo-Aryan) or Dravidian ones. For both countries, most immigrants to the US came from certain parts of the countries (and speak certain languages) more than others.

The other thing I'd say to point out these groups aren't monolithic is that the composition of the immigrants can be different at different points. Those who have spent time in San Francisco know that some of the several-generation Chinese-Americans who live here can sometimes be some of the poorest too, whereas more recent Chinese immigrants and their children are often much better off. Those who aren't Chinese or don't spend a lot of time in Chinatown will most often see the poorer multi-generation Chinese-American folks in service jobs in fancy San Francisco hotels and private clubs.

People's job in their home country matters too. If you're talking about skilled labor or grad students from China or India, that's a highly educated workforce, and they tend to prosper here too. In contrast, many of the immigrants from Mexico are more like peasants there and are largely unskilled labor. As among the native population, your parents' socioeconomic status matters a bit.

This "success" comes at a price. First, there's the cultural "tiger mother" syndrome and its jewish close cousin the obsessive schizophrenic mother. Then, there's the groupthink culture of shaming the child if they don't measure up to the extremely high performance expectations. Finally, there's lack of independent critical thinking that inevitably results as a result of conformity to group expectations.

You weren't a victim, everyone gets the shitty end of the stick sometimes. One day it's you because you're too brown the next it's me because I'm too white. Or just maybe it wasn't either of those, it was just because sometimes people are just being people and dissed us for reasons unknown.

The thing I notice the more "Progressive" this new generation gets and "Race" supposedly isn't an issue for them. They are more introverted and when they aren't being introverted they are more cliquish than ever. Sure it's a motley group or queers, blacks, chinks and crackers and muslims but they can be just as mean and nasty to someone who's not in their clique, as racial groups can be.

We might be able to beat the concept of race out of people. But people's basic fundamental need to gravitate around a short list of people that they really trust when shit goes down. Will always prevail. So it's not race, but it is still clans, gangs, clique mentality.

Just look how brutal they can be. It's gotten so out of hand, we've got a grown ass man 400lb Football quarterback crying about being bullied by his best friend.

And for once it wasn't about race. Now here's a huge black guy that could bend you and I in half, at the same time, feeling like he was being razzed by his best friend. But then never once made it about race. Instead it was about Homophobic slurs.

I take umbrage at the generalization, because as was already shown, there are white/white Hispanics. There are black Hispanics. There are Mestizos with all different kinds of indigenous blood in them, mixed with all kinds of other ethnicities.

Yet, in most of Latin America, the caste system is the same. The whiter you are, the better--The greater your wealth, the greater your power.

It would be wrong to believe that the white minority that controls the machinery and divvies up the land does so because they are more driven. Being driven doesn't get you wealth and power, as is evidenced by the (not coincidentally) darker-skinned Latinos who migrate to America. They are extraordinarily driven people, not because of their skin color, but as evidenced by the shit they endure just to get here, and the arguably shittier things they have to do to stay (including dealing with racist assholes in America)
