The reasons vary by city, but in many cases, the reason you can't get gigabit internet speeds—without the threat of that service being provided by a company that wants to discriminate against certain types of traffic—is because of the giant telecom businesses that want to kill net neutrality in the first place.

I've been looking at rural properties...and, occasionally I will come across one that has no commercial Internet vendors like a cable or telco.

But it will have fiber Internet supplied to it by the PUD (Public Utility District). And the speeds (according to to http://www.broadbandmap.gov/ ) will be 1Gpbs -- Google class speeds!

So, by not having "competitive businesses" and instead having a Government owned utility, you end up with 20 times the speed?!
