California Couple Told To Cut Back On Lawn Watering Faces Fine For Cutting Back On Lawn Watering

It's a tag-team grudge match between intrusive state government in this corner and intrusive local government in that corner, and of course the rest of us caught in the middle.

A Southern California couple who scaled back watering their lawn during a drought got a warning from their community that they could be fined for letting the grass turn brown.

Just last week, the state passed emergency drought measures that require cities to cut back their water use and permits them to fine residents up to $500 for overwatering lawns.

In that light, Michael Korte and Laura Whitney decided to cut back on watering their lawns. When it turned a shade too brown, Glendora, Calif., city officials sent them a letter warning them they had 60 days to "green up” their lawn or pay a fine ranging from $100 to $500.

"I don't think it's right for us to start pouring water into our lawn in the middle of July during a drought,” said Whitney. "We're kind of in a quandary about what to do.”

In Glendora, City Manager Chris Jeffers said the city did encourage conservation, but that Korte's and Whitney's lawn was in such bad shape that it was reported as possibly abandoned.

"We were responding to a complaint that we received of a possible abandoned property,” Jeffers said. "Crews visited and determined it was not abandoned, but not kept. The landscape was dead and there were large areas of just dirt.”

This is great, because it puts the couple in a perpetual state of confusion. Water too much, and Glendora can fine you. Water too little and Glendora can fine you.

This is America: Stay in line, folks, because you're damned if you do and damned if you don't

That lawn has not been watered AT ALL for a matter of months. Also, the tree is suffering from lack of water and incompetent pruning. The city has a valid complaint here. Deep water every 2 weeks or so, and prune that poor tree correctly already. Established bermuda grass does great under these conditions. We can conserve water and have decent landscaping.

You can lead a horticulture, but you can't make her think!

Can you still buy oil based paint in CA?

For the last 4 years our summer lawn has looked like that.
This year I got a notice on my door for growing weeds in my yard.

That's all that's left. It's going to take a while of arid weather and regular precipitation before the St Augustine grass takes hold and chokes all of the weeds out. I'm not spraying poison on my lawn, and end up giving our selves nerve disorders and worse just so the investors on my block can maintain "That Look".

Yep, because latex paint washes off of the side of your house too...

Note, the professional lawn care companies use a biodegradable DYE to green up lawns for tournaments etc; now available to homeowners. The dye is transparent and will not kill or inhibit the grass.

PAINT, on the other hand, COATS the plant with an opaque colored layer. If the chemicals don't kill the grass, the opacity will. Also, the latex film will crack and flake immediately with light traffic, growth or shrinkage of the grass, or even daily temperature cycling.

My take home message: Don't hire a painter to care for your lawn, and don't hire Meineke to do anything besides maybe a muffler!

Sounds like the usual political nonsense that never ceases to shock me.
Democrats told them not to water. Republicans fined them for not watering.
This is why we need sane minds, the Independents.

seems all the tragedies this group is concerned about involve real estate prices, watering your lawn, and gay people.

The idea that people in California should have lawns looking like new England is an insult to common sense.

Californians are a very demanding bunch. They usually get what they want.

Unbelievable... Not only do Californians want to overpay by TRIPLE what their house would be worth in other parts of the country, but they expect green grass too...

The nerve of them...

We're paying the same for the house, but 10 times for the land. Hey, you get what you pay for, and when the streets are paved with gold, you get a lot more.
Did the snow finally melt out there?

For treating you like a slave?
