I don't know why I didn't think of that.
That's not only a good idea for Skype for most news sites on the internet where you are being tracked and force fed videos you didn't click to hear.
I added this to the list to clean up CNN
0.0.0.0 ads.cnn.com
0.0.0.0 t.co
0.0.0.0 t1.visualrevenue.com

Ah ad free CNN!
I used Firefox Network tab in developer tools.

That should get rid of most of the junk on that site.
Well, newegg.com has gotten annoying with ads. It now has pop-ups on product pages that block the actual content you want to see when buying actual products. Very stupid and annoying. Here's how to fix it and make the page load go from a minute to a few seconds.
Like with Skype and other apps and pages inundate with ads and user-tracking spyware, the best course of action is to bit bucket all traffic to malware hosts. To do that edit your .hosts file, on windows that's \Windows\system32\drivers\etc\.hosts, and add the following lines, and you'll be happier with browsing newegg.com.

If you want this to be helpful for people like me.... Start with "click on this. then click that. Go down three lines and type ';alkfj flad ffajs."
I hate ads and would love to be able to do something about them. But I need the "Dummy's" fix. You assume that I know what to do with all those lines of nonsense, assuming I ever even find the "host" file.
Break it down into super small parts. Take nothing for granted. Imagine you are talking a five-year-old through this over the telephone.
I don't have a single issue browsing newegg, no pop-up ads and no regular ads... pages load instantly too
That thing you think is a computer is just a cardboard box with images drawn on it in marker.
Also add
0.0.0.0 display-a.akamaihd.net
0.0.0.0 akamaihd.net
to block the DNS Locker ads.

I don't even know what a "host" file is.
Why can't I just type "fix it" somewhere, and it gets fixed.
Break it down into super small parts.
1. On your desktop, right mouse click, new, shortcut.
2. In the dialog under "target", type "C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" without the quotes.
3. Click the "advanced..." button.
4. In the "Advanced Properties" dialog check "Run as administrator"
5. In the "Advanced Properties" press the "OK" button.
6. In the short-cut dialog, press the "OK" button.
7. Double-click the shortcut you just made.
8. Notepad will launch and you'll see a text file that looks like...

Don't listen to Call It Crazy. He's a troll who never has anything useful to add to the conversation. He's just here to attempt to piss me off -- an impossible task for a loser like him -- by contradicting anything I say. If I said it was wrong to rape babies, CIC would advocate it.
There is a ad-blocking plug-in for Firefox called Ad-block, which you can install from this URL
https://adblockplus.org/en/
However, Ad-block, which I do run, does not
1. Block Skype ads (CIC is an idiot).
2. Does not block the ads I just mentioned on newegg.com.
3. You can right click images to block URL patterns, however, web pages will load much faster if you just block ad networks in your .host files. Doing this is also more effective as the URL patterns can change. Also, Ad-block does take time to filter things from web pages particularly when using wildcards in the URL patterns. Blocking domains in your .host file does not.
I'd still recommend using Ad-block and its default blacklist, but you should still add the above entries to your .host file.
Another mechanism is to use a program called Peerblock to block ad networks. It downloads blacklists every time you start it. However, it does block some things that it shouldn't and would cause some websites and functions to fail to work, so I don't recommend it to novices.
However, Ad-block, which I do run, does not
....

I run AdBlock Plus on Firefox and I don't see any ads on newegg.com. Are you subscribed to automatically-updated filter lists in your AdBlock plug-in?

Although, I recommend 0.0.0.0 for the bitbucket address rather than localhost 127.0.0.1 because your network stack will try to connect to localhost:8080 and wait for a timeout.

OK, done. Gedit let me do a global replace.

Skype has become spyware. It talks to Facebook, MSN, double-click, and a bunch of other servers it has no business talking to. And the ads on Skype have become intrusive. It's one thing to put text ads with URLs on the side. It's another to have a flash banner ad constantly annoying users.
Well, if you piss off enough users, you'll eventually motivate someone with brains to disable your malware. And I was just motivated today to do so. I sniffed the traffic Skype was sending and figured out which servers to block.
Here's what you have to do to get rid of ads in Skype. Edit your hosts file to include the following lines. In Windows, the hosts file will be in \Windows\system32\drivers\etc as "hosts" without any file extension.

These changes send all traffic to the above servers to the bit bucket. Don't use localhost, cause your network stack will actually try to send the data to a server on your machine and that could slow down your experience a little.
