aka a second train line to compete with SPRR:

San Francisco Call, July 1893:

It has been estimated that the value of the products shipped out of this county during the last year was fully $12,000,000. It took 1960 cars to haul out the 41,148,100 pounds of raisins, the product of last year, there being an increase over 1891 of 13,000,000 pounds. There were 250,000,000 pounds of wheat, 15,000,000 pounds of cattle, 30,000,000 pounds of fruit, 40,000,000 pounds of lumber, in addition to millions of pounds of other products.

How much the Southern Pacific Company received fur hailing that large amount ol goods to a market of course cannot be learned, but many persons estimate that it obtained nearly 20 percent of its value.

There are thousands of acres of fine timber in this county that will quickly reach the markets when just rates are secured. Every product will be increased several fold, and there will be an influx of settlers whenever we secure a competing line.

The San Francisco & San Joaquin Valley Railroad commenced construction in Stockton in 1895. The Fresno passenger station was built in 1899.

Sad that these days people don't think a new railroad is a good idea. Then again, we'll probably have self-driving battery-powered passenger cars by 2030, when LA is allegedly going to be linked to SF via the Fresno & the super train, making the super train utterly uneconomic for people who don't need to get to LA or SF in under 2 hrs.

This cracked me up:

oh yeah, Buffett owns the tracks and right-of-way today, acquired when he bought the entire system for $26.5B
