It's not stupid. Clinton, Bush, every CIA official of any power, everybody who works in the DoD, all of Washington DC, including every member of Congress, knows they take money from Saudi Arabia. They willingly and knowingly do so, fully aware of the dangers - and benefits - working with the Saudis provides.
The family of powerful Saudis escaped on a Government Charter Jet within hours of 9/11, the only plane allowed in the air (not a COMMERCIAL jet, the kind you buy tickets for, as the official denial explicitly uses to fool people) with the full blessing of WH and a military escort.
The Week after 9/11, all of DC was petrified that the American Public would demand revenge against Saudi Arabia, fortunately the Press was very helpful in distracting the public to Afghanistan.

that's what it comes down to. our oil is more expensive to get out of the ground than theirs is. and they have a lot more of it anyway.
