The Downside of Diversity

From multicultural festivals to pronouncements from political leaders, the message is the same: our differences make us stronger. But a massive new study, based on detailed interviews of nearly 30,000 people across America, has concluded just the opposite. Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam -- famous for "Bowling Alone," his 2000 book on declining civic engagement -- has found that the greater the diversity in a community, the fewer people vote and the less they volunteer, the less they give to charity and work on community projects. In the most diverse communities, neighbors trust one another about half as much as...

Nair is explicitly conceptualizing DEI as a means of inserting a political police force whose task is to scrutinize nuclear facility personnel to ensure that only regime loyalists who think regime-approved happy thoughts are allowed near to the facilities. The idea that the primary threats to American nuclear infrastructure come from foreign adversaries is antiquated and racist; the real threat is now internal, posed by ‘domestic violent extremists’. ...

Just because someone looks foreign and speaks with an accent doesn’t mean that you should scrutinize them more carefully before letting them close to a nuclear reactor. It would be racist to operate on the assumption that Muhammed Al-Muhammed might be working for ISIS, or that Wang Wei could be an operative for the CCP. Conversely, just because James Jackson’s family has been in North Carolina since the 18th century and has fought in every war since the French and Indian is no reason to think he’s a loyal American.

In a sense, she isn’t wrong about this – this is an inherent complication introduced by mass immigration. A racially diverse population loses all external signifiers of belonging: neither appearance, nor language, nor faith can serve as a reliable in-group indicator. As the state peels away from the ethnic loyalties that once bound it together, it can no longer count on the default loyalty of its core population. The result is that everyone is under suspicion.

1. What is a “high trust society”?

There are two things working together. One operates beneath the surface, a kind of “spiritual” connection in which everyone understands the rules of society. Second, everyone can be trusted to follow them.

“Diversity” destroys this.

2. Why is this?

In theory, the idea of diversity seems grand. We will mix all kinds of people together with different idea and it will create a fantastic laboratory of innovation that will drive our society to new heights.

But it does not work this way.
3. Every culture has a language, a set of customs, the way things are done here. Many of them are unspoken and picked up intuitively. No one should have to tell you to return your shopping cart. This is a thing everyone knows. Or should know.
4. Languages, even cultural languages can be learned. But it takes time and often many of the subtleties are lost. Why does it seem perfectly natural — why did it seem natural — in Danish society to leave a sleeping baby outside, in their pram, while you go into a shop?
5. Maybe even the Danes themselves don’t know or never really thought about it. High trust societies work this way. It allows them to do what they do without a lot of energy being expended to explain every action, why we do things one way and not another.
6. Diversity, stresses this situation immediately. A small number can be dealt with graciously. But when large numbers of people come from outside the culture, now a tremendous amount of energy must be spent on cross cultural communication.
7. This is energy that isn’t being applied elsewhere. And when the numbers of increase to the point where you no longer have a dominant culture or one that is nominally dominant and you have a multi-factional society, the energy spent in cross cultural relations …
8. … starts to consume a significant amount of social energy.

In many cases, we are discovering, the cultural differences are significant. They are not just like us but with darker skin or a funny accent. There are real incommensurabilities. Bridges that can’t be crossed.
9. These can create real frictions. Because part of integrating into a new society means letting go of your old habits to embrace the ways of the new place, a kind of narrative and cultural suicide.

But what if this doesn’t happen?

Then tensions begin to mount.
10. And all those supposed innovations, all that energy that is supposed to come from diversity?

That is in many ways a myth. If people have already shed their home culture to embrace that of the “just do what works” technocrat, there is no cross cultural learning …
11. … because the people have already abandoned their own culture to become fungible cogs, technocrats in the machine. Or they are expending great amounts of energy putting on the mask of a good technocrat to play that role in society.
12. I am sure examples can be given of cross cultural innovations. It does happen. But on the whole, those innovations come at the expense of a whole range of downstream costs that society has to bear because it must grapple with all manners of people who don’t know the rules.
13. This is why you can never build a high trust society that is diverse and cosmopolitan, unless the diversity is a mere cosmetic thing, people look different but are culturally the same.

It is possible that great ideas can emerge in the cauldron of a cosmopolitan environment.
14. But it is just as likely, if not more likely, that in this same society you will live with constant tensions, frictions, and conflicts. It may be “dynamic,” but so is a pot that is about to boil over.
15. More likely in this situation is that there are a few who can operate well in this environment and do well for themselves, but for many of the average people, they much prefer to live in a well functioning high trust society.
16. “Diversity is our strength” is an idea that seems good in the abstract, but cannot be really instantiated because it runs against the fundamental nature of cultures and languages and what makes these work — an embedded, organic and unspoken connection between people.
17. It is this connection which is stressed, undermined or even lost in a multicultural context.

Great piece.

This is exactly what a German friend of my wife did. The husband was over here as a junior executive for Liebherr and when my wife was out with her, the German lady would let her two young kids sleep in car seats in the van with windows rolled down while the adults went inside. Also, when the German lady came to visit, she would let the kids sleep in prams out front porch while the ladies were inside.

Totally fine, only a retarded and autocratic society would impose fines on people leaving their kids in the car claiming adult parents can't figure out when it's too hot or too cold or too long. Back in the days it was "boys, Mom and Dad are going to go food shopping, we'll be back in 1 hour max, here's some candy and magazines".

(KRON) — Researchers at Stanford University and Princeton University have teamed up with the County of Santa Clara to attempt to map and redact racial covenants around the county by using artificial intelligence.

Racially restrictive covenants are clauses in property deeds that ban individuals of a particular race from buying a home. Despite the U.S. Supreme Court setting laws barring racial covenants, researchers say they persist in national property records.

When Dan Ho purchased a home in Palo Alto, he recounts, “We had to sign papers that said that the ‘property shall not be used or occupied by any person of African, Japanese or Chinese or any Mongolian descent,’ except for the capacity of a servant to a Caucasian person.”

Writer of this article doesn't know shit.

SCOTUS only ruled that the courts can't enforce those covenants. It did not ban them.

Deed covenants can't be removed easily.

I was recently playing Fallout: New Vegas again, and the Vault 3 scene reminded me of this stupidity. There's a handful of the residents that think opening the vault to outsiders after a nuclear war is a virtuous idea and everyone'll be singing kumbaya. Here's the dialog between your character and the leader of the raider gang who resides in the vault now:

But they can be legally challenged as far as violating "fair housing" laws

there is a basic high trust morality, one where you have a “leave a penny take a penny” system or where places like nordstroms can have a reputation for “accepting any return for any reason” because they pride themselves on top notch, zero friction customer service.

then some group starts stealing pennies and returning 12 year old converse all stars as brand new louboutins and the systems choke.

people do it on purpose. i have a good friend who has some “second world” extended family associated with his daughter. they buy products with warrantees and mark the warranty expiration on their calendars so they can return the goods for new ones a week before the warranty expires. it’s a game to them, an obvious way to come out ahead. it’s third world morals in a first world system.

and it just breaks everything.

this is why you cannot just drop such low trust non-golden rule people into high trust golden rule societies and expect to lift them up. they have no interest in being lifted. they just see easy pickins and go picking. they think you are stupid for letting them and lose respect for you and your ways. after all, why respect a culture full of idiots who are so easy to take advantage of?

it becomes the second world way of life.

the second world is a siege, a hostage scenario, a way of life under attack and abuse. the systems are not all crumbling by accident, they are being pulled down by people who play on one move look ahead and cannot pass a marshmallow test (or would have no interest in doing so if they could). it’s people who always defect in a prisoner’s dilemma living in a society built around a presumption that mostly everyone would learn to cooperate because the game is iterative and you’re going to play over and over again and that’s how we all win.

not in the second world you don’t.

The Marshmallow Test is a famous psychological study in which children are offered a choice between a small sweet now or a big sweet later. Kids who can’t resist the former tend to be have more trouble in life.

Interestingly, this famous experiment started in Trinidad to look into why Asian Indians had more money than blacks: because the Indians were better at resisting immediate temptation for long term benefits. Fortunately, the academic Walter Mischel came up with a rather transparent rationale for why the big race gap on his test wasn’t really, when you stop and think about it, about race, it was about whether the child’s father lived with him (which seems to correlate closely with race, but hey look a squirrel!)

Haha exacty and with zero repercussions why wouldn't they? Parents are fags these days who let their kids walk all over them.

The logical conclusion from the observation that low Gini coefficients correlate to better societies would be to advocate for full communism. This should make us suspicious, however, because every time communism has been tried it’s been catastrophic, and the same is true in a gentler and more gradual but no less pernicious way of its more milquetoast cousin socialism. On closer examination, we see that there is an important confounding variable. Countries with low Gini coefficients, such as Sweden or Japan, tend to be more ethnically homogeneous than countries with high Gini coefficients, such as South Africa or Brazil: that is, racial diversity is correlated with high levels of income inequality. The inhabitants of homogeneous countries are competing with near-peers, naturally leading to low Gini coefficients since you don’t expect large differences in outcome in the absence of small variances in ability; at the same time the inhabitants of homogeneous communities are also more inclined to cooperate with one another, resulting in lower crime and higher levels of happiness (particularly amongst people such as the Swedes or the Japanese, who are very cooperative, high-trust peoples).

If we look at what has happened in our own societies as we have tried to make them more equal and, simultaneously, more diverse (which we are obligated to do, because we are all equal), we find that the consequences of our fanatical embrace of total equality have been, without exception, entropic. Our institutions are crumbling under the burden of the self-imposed incompetence of DEI. Standards drop every year in the education system, from kindergarten all the way through doctoral programs. Urban areas have long since decayed into crime-ridden hell zones with broken infrastructure neglected by kleptocratic governments. Public debt has exploded into the stratosphere with nothing tangible to account for it but the endless money pits of social entitlement programs feeding an ever-growing dependent class. Mass immigration from the third world – the denizens of which are morally equal to Europeans in every way, meaning that there are no moral grounds to prefer a country maintain its numbers with its own babies rather than someone else’s – threatens to displace white people from dominance in every single white country. I could go on. I don’t think I have to.

Some believe that the answer to this is simply to force society to accept the overwhelming evidence of human biodiversity. Once it is generally acknowledged that there are real, measurable, and significant differences in behavioural inclinations and cognitive capacity between ancestral population groups, we can implement colour-blind meritocracy, in which individuals will be free to rise to whatever station their specific talents suit them to, while everyone accepts as a matter of course that this means that certain groups will be over-represented at certain levels of society – in practice, blacks at the bottom, Hispanics and low-caste Indians in the middle, and whites, Asians, and high-caste Indians at the top. Don’t pretend you don’t know that that’s how it would shake out. We all know. Even the equalists know.
