Apple and windows had already been around for years. A computer was still in less than 5% of the homes that I even saw as a residential carpet installer at the time. Windows 95 came and went and the uptick new computer users wasn't that drastic. It was the bombardment of those AOL floppies then shinny CD's that made people feel like they were missing something. By 1997 PC sales were exploding, and I was starting to see more and more computers in homes. By then I left flooring and started doing software full time.
As crude as that 14.4 or 28.8 baud modem was on most new '97 computers, AOL made the world live TV.
