The thing is that he's on the record talking about DAvid Duke and what he represents (and at previous times several years ago, declining to be part of a party that David Duke is at the forefront of).

In Charlottesville he talked about "both sides" being bad. THe more normal American way would have been to primarily denounce the neo nazi white supremacists, and then as an add on, explain that the actions of some of those protesting them were bad as well.
