I like the way you think Hype new prisons so illegals will quit coming over. Good thinking!
The for profit prison industry, whether private or public, is one of the greatest moral failings of our country.
The drug war, and its resulting over population of prisons should NOT be a partisan issue. It doesnt work. It will never work. It only creates blood money for rich people.
The Holder memo, issued in August 2013, instructed his prosecutors to avoid charging certain defendants with drug offenses that would trigger long mandatory minimum sentences. Defendants who met a set of criteria such as not belonging to a large-scale drug trafficking organization, gang or cartel, qualified for lesser charges — and in turn less prison time — under Holder’s policy.
Civil liberties advocates at the time praised the move as appropriately merciful — potentially preventing people from facing lifelong penalties for crimes that did not warrant such a punishment. But Sessions’s new charging policy, outlined in a two-page memo and sent to more than 5,000 assistant U.S. attorneys across the country and all assistant attorneys general in Washington, orders prosecutors to “charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offense†and rescinds Holder’s policy immediately.
Why ? Is this for the prison industrial complex, big pharma or both ?
Why ?
I think it reflects the philosophical views of the men in charge. But the private prison company stock went up shortly after the election, so speculate away.
The way to make America great again is clearly to put more Americans behind bars.
Even better to put criminals underground. That way we don't have to feed them.

Who cares as long as wild criminals are not walking the streets. The welfare of criminals is last on my list.

Until you're declared a criminal, becasue you're inconveniencing someone with power.
We're not there yet, but we already have too many people with long sentences for non-violent crimes.

Im sure analysts had carefully considered which industries would thrive under each possible president. If you recall, Healthcare stocks went zulu after Obama's election in 2012, and for good reason given how Obamacare enriched them.

Redefining criminal behavior so it cuts through wide swath of poor people's normal behavior, like smoking weed instead of drinking, is a huge problem. Noone should go to prison if they didnt steal or put someone at risk of physical harm. Getting high is neither of these. If someone gets high and stabs someone, or drives his car into another car, thats different.

If i was a criminal, the welfare of criminals would be on the top of my list, simply because I would become biased.
Until then, why would i give a damn for criminals? There are more important things in life to worry about.

Smoking a joint should not be a crime. It's the hard core violent criminals that are the true criminals as far as i am concerned.

This article is about drug offenders. People caught in possession of coke or herione 3 times can go to prison for a large portion of their lifetime. Does that sound like freedom?

Also, under Bush, a small amount of weed (more than a quarter oz i think?) counted as a strike. So a habitual weed smoker could have been imprisoned for many years.

Let's outlaw golf. Trump is now a criminal. He should be taken off the street.
Most incarcerations have nothing to do with bad behavior. Most prisoners are incarcerated because republicans decided to prevent minorities from voting by criminalizing drug use for specific drugs used more commonly by minorities and by very selectively enforcing drug laws. In effect, all the people incarcerated for drug offenses are political prisoners in every sense of the term.
America should not have political prisoners. Political prisoners are not real criminals, not in the sense you are using the term. You are equating these political prisoners to murderers and rapists, and that's wrong.
This isn't a surprise, but the obvious is now the news.
