Yep. Pretty messed up. I saw this on a Spring (as in Water) outing a few months ago. Some Z chicks are okay, but the Millies and older Zs are disgusting Prowling Prostitute types who look like they have lurked in alleyways down by the Wharves for many years. They were called "Brutes" in the early 19th Century.

My litmus test is, "Would I stop to help them, or would lock my door and drive on by?"

You see these stories in the news time and time again, where some guy picks up a girl in a bar, only to be robbed, or killed, often with a convict male accomplice.

There was a meeting of the 2006 International Astronomy Union which was largely attended by teachers. They let the attendees vote.

The geophysical definition of a planet:

It has enough mass (and therefore gravity) to be round.
It has insufficient mass to undergo nuclear fusion in its interior.

Pluto achieves both.

The IAU's brand new definition of planet adopted at the 2006 meeting:

is in orbit around the Sun,
has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape), and
has "cleared the neighborhood" around its orbit.

"Cleared the neighborhood" is the problem. But it's a problem for many other planets, including Neptune. NEPTUNE hasn't "Cleared it's neighborhood" Look at Pluto's orbit, and of course Neptune has many bodies in it's orbit and probably many more we haven't found yet. Therefore Neptune isn't a planet, either.

But there's more. Jupiter has 100,000 planetoids in it's orbit. The Earth itself has 10,000 Near Earth Asteroids.

So technically, now Neptune, Jupiter, and Earth aren't Planets. Of course the IAU ignores their own criterion to preserve their planet status.

If there was a Mars sized object in the Oort Cloud, it wouldn't have enough mass to clear the neighborhood around it of comets, asteroids, etc. despite the same Mass being considered a planet if it was in the inner solar system.

What about a Double Planet? Would it just be considered a "Double Solar System Mass" even if both were the size of Earth?

At the 2006 meeting, a handful of Astronomers wanted to keep the number of planets "Low". The many Teachers in attendence at this meeting wanted to keep the number of "Real Planets" low so kids didn't have to memorize probably scores and scores of planets. There's also anti-US sentiment in Europe (Pluto being discovered by US Astronomers).

There's also the problem of a planet that escaped a solar system - is it no longer a planet because it was ejected from a solar system?
