I think it is clear that the thugs and protestors are deriving pleasure from acting out as they see fit.
The rush is amplified by both like-minded thugs, but also by law enforcement, the latter serving to justify the beliefs that serve as a rationale for the pleasurable acting out.
Another aspect is that these folks object to being disturbed while getting their rocks off. Negative feedback from counter-protestors or anyome questioning the rationale for their pleasure must be shut down.

I wonder if they're using a diluted version of pepper spray? It didnt seem to fade this guy much... I know pepper spray isnt foolproof, but he ran right back for a second helping after a good fogging to the face. He ran ok and seemed to be ok breathing.
