bestbuy online seems to have plenty of laptops in stock for 1 day or less delivery / pickup.
I wonder how their sales projections have been? When retailers get anxious of bad sales periods, they cut back on inventory as a way of saving costs. They hate to get caught with a lot of stale inventory, because every day it doesn't sell, it depreciates (especially computers, tech gets outdated fast). When your inventory depreciation losses are greater than the profits from your sales, you lose money, so they cut inventory and just focus on making sales of extremely profitable items.
Especially since most retailers have built up their online order systems and inventory logistic systems, I wonder if they tend to now go extra light on retail store stock, and just try to order it for next day deliver / pickup from a central warehouse. I'd expect some store stock though, especially on popular items.

Also what ever stock they do have in a warehouse you have to order for delivery. Is selling for a 40% premium than they were just 3 months ago.

Not a single box in the store, or one electronic item was in stockI'm glad my microwave went to the bad over a year ago because when I go to Walmart, I pass that aisle and for weeks now the only ones on the shelf are the display models. There used to be three and four boxes of each model underneath each one and now the whole space has been empty forever.

I think 1) is the main cause.

Apple reported a large upswing in computer sales last quarter (April through June). I'm guessing that was almost entirely through online purchases.

We went to Best Buy and the only items they had in stock was petty incidentals like cheap Bluetooth pill boxes, micro Usb cables, 5 year old phone cases and micro cassettes for answering machines and small kitchen appliances.
Not a single box in the store, or one electronic item was in stock. No computers no TVs no Refrigerators.
Then Yesterday our second fridge on the porch died, so I went to Brands Mart USA to buy a new one, the same thing is happening there.
The wife has also noticed Ross, and Marshalls and other stores she goes clothes and housewares shopping is also empty and lacking any stock.
These stores all say the same thing, "More Stock is coming" or "There's a manufacturing backlog from our suppliers",
On the face of it, it would seem that since China was in lock down, and now the Manufacturing hubs are now flooding, the supply chain has been disrupted.
But the truth is, many products are manufactured in Japan or South Korea and US makes the Chips. South Korea makes most of the screens in devices.
So I don't think China disrupting the supply chain holds up. As the shelves have been well stocked throughout the pandemic. Perhaps some items are suffering, but there should be a few brands that should be represented in stores that is not sourced from China. But they are not.
Then it hit me, the merchandise all started disappearing from the shelves about 90 days ago. When the Rioters were using front end loaders to crush Best Buy entrance and wiped the store out. The Rioters have been targeting major brand companies, and they are worried. Of course them being the Woke Commie Bastards that they are. They publicly say they Support the Rioters BLM and Antifa. But they don't want to lose all of their merch.
So that is why they are keeping all of their stock in a Warehouse or just not restocking until this blows over. That way they wont have to hire armed guards and denounce the Lawlessness they are actively promoting.

I think it's hysterical that many of these same companies are advertising Labor Day Specials, knowing full well they wont have those items on hand to sell. They must really think they are funny or something.
The wife asked me if I think there will be merchandise for the Christmas season. I said I doubt it, the Christmas season is planned way in advance, the marketers, product developers, and manufactures are all hard at work in March to make sure products hit the market by Black Friday. All of those people everywhere around the world were home on lock down when all of that should have been happening.
What do you suspect is the reason behind empty store shelves?
