In my opinion, it’s a colossal pump-and-dump scheme, the likes of which the world has never seen. In a pump-and-dump game, promoters “pump” up the price of a security creating a speculative frenzy, then “dump” some of their holdings at artificially high prices. And some cryptocurrencies are pure frauds. Ernst & Young estimates that 10 percent of the money raised for initial coin offerings has been stolen.

The losers are ill-informed buyers caught up in the spiral of greed. The result is a massive transfer of wealth from ordinary families to internet promoters. And “massive” is a massive understatement — 1,500 different cryptocurrencies now register over $300 billion of “value.”

Nice! Thanks for sharing @Cash.
Demand for crypto and mining is accelerating. Exciting times!

"Ukraine’s government-owned nuclear power plant picked a firm to build a massive data center in Rivne for cryptocurrency mining operations. After a bidding process, Energoatom chose Kyiv Energy Construction Company to handle the nuclear plant crypto mining project."

Bitcoin is very wasteful of energy
770   Onvacation   2021 Jan 31, 7:57am

NEW: Study reveals Bitcoin's electricity consumption is underestimated and finds the network "represents close to half of the current global data centre electricity use" (August 2020).

As you can see crypto is extremely wasteful and not environmentally friendly.

Not sure I understand the "hysterical" part: there is actually a shitload of nuclear power plants in EE.

And it turns out, Chernobyl wasn't the disaster it was made out to be.

I'm all for nukes. But let's not waste the energy on crypto.

speaking of hysterical..... isnt WookieMan the guy who predicted Bitcoin to be at 1,200 dollars? That one is always good for a laugh.

Fully aware. I'm sure the nuke plants are all above board too... That was kind of my point. Being 2 generations removed and dealing with them frequently, they're not the most honest people. That's all. But neither are crypto bugs, so maybe it's a marriage made in heaven?

@WookieMan You have ancestry from Eastern Europe too?

Yes. I'm not super interested in it to be honest, but I believe my grandfather came over from Poland. May have been great grandfather. My grandma was already here. So my personal mutt mix has some Lithuanian and I also believe a touch of Irish as well. I'd have to ask my sister as I think she did one of those Ancestry or 23 and me (can't remember what it's called) tests.

My experience with most Eastern Euros was through my parents business when I'd give them some help on weekends. Some were really great people and nice for sure. I don't want to give the business away so as to not dox myself, but it wasn't a bar. Most of them simply don't listen or follow rules though. Lots of frustrations when there were big groups and the occasional call to the police. I find that they will push everything to the limit and are either stupid or play the role of stupid as an act extremely well.

I've also worked with Ukranian mafia in Chicago real estate. It's been 10 years now or so since I've seen the guy and his son. They had to be top 3 in however their organization works in the mob, at least for the region. Maybe top. I'm sure there were still higher ups back in Ukraine funneling them cash as well.

They were building completely decked out condos in average neighborhoods. There was almost no way they were turning a profit, even buying some of the finishes at discount. I never witnessed it my self, but there was almost certainly mortgage fraud rampant. When all the buyers of dozens (that we knew about) of condos were all 24 year Ukranian dudes that look like they cannot even read or write, something is up. I think most would buy and just stop making payments and would get a kickback for doing so. Probably some sort of laundering scheme for sure.

All groups can be sketchy for sure from anywhere in the world obviously. I've just experienced some shady people from Eastern Europe and Russia as well. Polish seem to be the best of that group, but I've still experienced some bad apples from there as well.

How do you hodle bitcoin?

But seriously, conservative meme makers need to get their grammar and spelling exactly correct for maximum impact.

Leftists find memes much easier to dismiss if the leftist can feel good about finding a spelling error in it. Their whole life is about resentment for being middle school losers, and how they think they compensated by being better students.
786   Bitcoin   2021 Feb 1, 5:57pm

You HODL by not selling, you hold on for dear life. It basically means, that you dont panic sell during dips.....you add more and buy the dip. HODL=SMART INVESTING
787   Onvacation   2021 Feb 1, 6:42pm

Patrick says

Hold On for Dear Life!

There are a horde of (future) bitcoin millionaires that are never going to sell until they reach the price point they know it will one day go to (moon shot).

HODLers keep the price high because all of the new incoming "coins" come mostly from the miners. When a couple million "retail" retail buyers spend $20 a piece at the "crypto kiosk" at their local liquor store the price per coin is bid up considerably. It's like a lottery ticket.

Some fools accumulate with no intention of ever selling until the price in "fiat" meets some exponential multiple of what they "bought in" for. Them is they that "HODL".
788   Onvacation   2021 Feb 1, 6:43pm

"miners"
789   Onvacation   2021 Feb 1, 6:47pm

It's a Ponzi scam by definition. The only way to get your money out id for the greater fool to put their money in. No assets. No cash reserves. No dividends. All incoming money consumed by the miners to buy electricity, hardware, food, shelter, etc. If you want to sell someone has to buy.
790   Onvacation   2021 Feb 1, 6:48pm

Fortunately for the unscrupulous trader that doesn't care about who it hurts or the environmental damage caused by bitcoin, there are a lot of fools.

Don't even need to lose the password. No one accepts BTC as a currency. Gotta pay $$$ for the pizza. That's not ever changing.

I bet if you keep trading those 100shares of LUV into BTC, you will have enough for a downpayment (soon). I hear IL is pretty cheap compared to nice places like SoCal.
798   WookieMan   2021 Feb 1, 8:42pm

So no travel? I totally get how that could be miserable. I feel for ya. You'd figure the crypto turned out for you so you'd be wealthy and could do whatever you'd want. I guess not. Can't answer a question. Where did you travel last?

I live where others do vacation. Those "others" are usually peeps who live in IL and are tired of shoveling snow.....not everyone can afford the sunshine tax :)

low 70's the next few days.....gonna do some MTB'ing and hiking with the doggy.

Naive. Figured as much. I don't shovel, I have people for that.

Fun part is I pay 1/10th of what you do and I don't live under a Nazi regime AND I make more. 70's is not that nice. I'll take 80's and boating around St. Thomas and St. John over riding a bike. I mean my kids might like that, not my cup of tea. Adults gotta adult, lol.
