As I understand it, it is based on a religious belief that a person is born into the class they deserve based on the level or their morals from their past life.

That is a good missionary definition. Because there is nothing like class in Indian system. Because class is based on money. Indian system is based on how intelligent you are.
The class system if you want to call it that is there based on your profession. But it is only grouping, it is not a stratified system like you see in west.
The professions were stratified by the british (ie missionaries) to sow divisions. People fought this stratification in the beginning but later they had to accept it since they did not get any jobs until they accept it.
