There's barely any contemporary mention of Mohammed - he seems to have been a real figure, an Arab influenced by Christian/Jewish thought, but the first Koran is centuries after his life.

This book explores the idea that Mohamed is mostly legendary and that most of the Koran was written/edited afterwards to explain the Arab Victory over the hollowed out Roman and Persian Empires.

It also brings up the Monophysites - a heresy very popular - maybe even plurality/majority view in Syria/Egypt, and how the Emperor's and Patriarch's longstanding oppression of Monophysites led them to defect en mass to bordering Arabs. And NOT the ones in Mecca/Medina, that legend was added later, but the ones right on the border of Syria and Judea.
