This year more than most I’m seeing so many negative comments about the 4th celebrations especially fireworks. How much longer will there be a 4th?

Within 5 years Juneteenth celebrations will likely supplant our traditional 4th of July.
I predict Sideshows will replace patriotic fireworks displays:

And Beyonce will write a new National Equity Anthem.

Fine!

That was the date that Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed for giving nuclear bomb technology to the Soviets in 1953.

Celebrate that.

And if you believe they were innocent, even Wikipedia admits they were guilty:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_and_Ethel_Rosenberg

For decades, the Rosenbergs' sons (Michael and Robert Meeropol) and many other defenders maintained that Julius and Ethel were innocent of spying on their country and were victims of Cold War paranoia. After the fall of the Soviet Union, much information concerning them was declassified, including a trove of decoded Soviet cables (code-name: Venona), which detailed Julius's role as a courier and recruiter for the Soviets. Ethel's role was as an accessory who helped recruit her brother David into the spy ring and did clerical tasks such as typing up documents that Julius then passed to the Soviets.

I wonder what shit we'll find after our nation collapses?

I am tolerant of folks in the neighborhood setting off their illegal fireworks because when I was a kid, all the kids in the neighborhood including me had one great big boomfest. It wasn't just July 4th. It was "July 4th season".

Nowadays I make sure I'm home every July 4th to snuff out any fires that may occur in the yard, or the gutters. from a stray bottle rocket. Till recently, also at home to reassure my stressed out animal companions (the last of those passed away recently).

While I'm tolerant because of remembering the joy from my youth, I would also welcome a strong-fisted crackdown because of the stress it causes to animals.

It's unbelievable how many Communists there were in the 30s-50s, many on the NKVD payroll directly. John Wayne was almost assassinated. Donovan kissed NKVD feet and they knew everything. They even got him to have all OSS agents "Check In" at Soviet HQs in the Balkans and share their goal/objective of missions with them. FDR even gave back a USSR decryption book that US Military Intel obtained for a song from Finns in 1945.

Worst of all, it's a huge miracle that Henry Wallace was dropped in 1944 as Vice President. He was a USSR symp, but half his office were NKVD informants. Had he become President when FDR died...

Yeah it’s getting extreme here. People bitch all day long around here how it affects their dog and therefore everyone must stop because Fluffy goes crazy.

My dog is perfectly chill around gunfire, fireworks and other loud sounds. My previous dogs were too. Early socialization is the key. Harder to do with a grown-up rescue dog, I would imagine, but this is an experience I don't have - all my dogs were acquired as 1-2 month old pups.

Had a couple of Karen's post on neighborhood site while fireworks where going off. The complaining just made it that much funnier.
9   Onvacation   2021 Jul 8, 10:24am

We used to pop cap guns when the hunting puppies were eating. Associating gun noises with food and other good things.

I think dogs really key in on their keepers emotions. When you ask somebody, "Is your dog friendly?", the answer will tell you a lot more about the keeper than the dog.

The whole covfefe reminds me how one SF cunt called local
NPR station and went on a rant how Blue Angels should not be flying over SF during the Fleet Week because the sound of their engines spooks her illegal Salvadorian housekeeper.

Yep. Every dog is an individual.

Decades ago I rescued a young lab who couldn't care less about firecracker/fireworks noise till he got older, like around 12 or so. Then he got terrified.

As it would happen, I have a relative's middle aged Pit Bull staying with me for a while. She was also chill about the fireworks. Every dog is different.

The Pit Bull ought to get a reward for her behavior last night. She was key in us coming to the aid of a young lady we encountered on the street during our evening walk who was in serious need of public safety / law enforcement / medical EMT-type response. The dog was key in keeping this young lady calm till the responders arrived to do their jobs.

I learned a lot from that experience, especially a tremendous appreciation for the professionalism of the civil servants involved.

No!

I had a dog that was absolutely terrified of firecrackers and noise and such. Poor thing would crawl into my arms and just shake and he wasn't a small dog, about 50 lbs. Although I had a LOT of sympathy for him, I wouldn't even think of having a ban on the noise. He lived through it, he was entirely safe, nothing was going to happen to him but I did feel badly for him - but it was his problem. I've had other dogs, were they were entirely oblivious to the noise.

We have a "ban" in San Jose. Widely, universally flouted including by me when I was a kid and every kid on the block. Kind of like, the speed limits on the roads.

That's why I said, B.A.C.A.H. says
"a strong-fisted crackdown"
, because we already have a ban. (Like President Jackson said back in the day, "John Marshall has made his decision, now let's see him enforce it.")

A crackdown (not a ban as we already have a ban) would be a nice welcome change for the animals. But I would not ask nor lobby for it, because I remember what it was like to be a kid during "4th of July season". Boys will be boys. (sorry for the gender reference, Wokesters and SJW's).

Some people swear by marijuana treats for their skittish dogs. The stuff is expensivo, though, like $60 per small bag.

It's not that expensive in California. I have a friend that gets edibles sometimes. It was like $30 for a tin of like 30 - and that little chocolate candy, it's PLENTY for me. For a dog.. I'd have to cut it up into a quarter the size.

And if I really felt badly for my dog for panicking for a few hours, I would have just left town for a few hours. I used to go camping with them.

Benadryl at a dose of 25 mg tablet per 25 pounds. Totally safe for dogs. That and just run a fan and tv.

NO!

Look, just let them crawl into your lap on the couch, and put on a movie while you comfort them. They'll be, of course, fine, and really, it's rather enjoyable to be needed for comfort for a few hours.

The dog I had was absolutely terrified. He'd be shaking and burying his head into me, and all he wanted was comfort. All I had to do was pet him for a few hours, and frankly, I enjoyed it entirely. He was a big baby about it all, but he got all the attention I could give. It's enjoyable and sweet, cute and endearing.

Dogs are like kids, they are NOT kids, but they are similar. I enjoyed comforting mine.

China must make a ton of $$$ selling fireworks to US... imagine selling something to a person that they intentionally blow up, and no longer have... and China laughs all the way to the communist bank.
My Dog is scared of fireworks.
My Wife is not happy about them.
I can do without.

Did you enjoy setting them off when you were a kid?

Of course! That's the whole damned point of having a pet! The whole entire point is to give them a happy life and I enjoyed doing that.

Some people definitely should not have fireworks:

24   Tenpoundbass   2023 Jun 27, 11:27am

Telling people don't celebrate July 4th because their dog can't deal. Is like chastising people walking down the street, because their dog goes ape shit and wont stop barking. Probably people who trained their dog with a quarter in a Pringles can, for shitting on the rug, instead of a stern slap on the rump with a rolled up paper, and a strong reprimand.

My Dog runs up to the area where the fireworks are being lit, then runs back with everyone else. And is the first one back at the platform after it goes off.
At least that's how he was on his first July 4th, we'll see shortly if he still fancies them as a 2 year old dog..

Apu: "Celebrate the independence of your nation by blowing up a small part of it."

I love The Simpsons from the 1990s.

Nobody wants to imitate these drifting, shiftless, cultureless interviewees who’ve allowed themselves to be robbed of any history or meaning and unplugged from anyplace they can call home. They don’t love the country they live in, and they have no plans of moving anywhere else either. They live in a foggy, ambiguous, uncommitting in-between dimension, not belonging to their culture but also not not-belonging, either.
