#secondharvestfoodbank If you live in most places in the US and Canada, you are seeing help-wanted advertisements all over the place. Employers are complaining about not being able to find workers. Those willing to work are offered the most generous signing bonuses for many jobs. Housing prices are "going through the roof." The stock markets are booming. The used car market is at a record high.
The biggest boom that I personally lived through was the US from 1967 to 1968. What I am seeing now puts that boom to shame.
I'm a big fan of KPIX Channel 5 news. There was a segment last night that shocked me. This TV station is a big supporter of The Second Harvest Food Bank. This wonderful organization provides weekly food boxes for thousands of food-challenged families. With this boom, one would expect an easy Christmas for the organization with demand for their food dropping. Quite the opposite is true. They are seeing demand rising. They are struggling with supply chain challenges, food inflation with food prices going up 10% in one month, and donations dropping off.
What is going on here? Why aren't these families getting hired and spending their employment bonuses on food, etc.? Are these people lazy and without a work ethic? I think not. This is a warning that many people are being left out as the economy comes back to life. There are men and women with childcare issues who cannot go back to work. There are ill people (perhaps many with long-term Covid-19 problems.) There are disabled people. There are retired people living on Social Security checks being decimated by inflation. These people have "fallen through the cracks."
My readers, all of us are fortunate indeed.

I wouldn't call a few meth heads sharing a van or tent a "Family"

I've bitched about it before. PARAGRAPH BREAKS. Two punches of the return key and this is much easier to read.

I'm not going to read it. The title says it all. We're not in an economic boom. It's called inflation. So the poorest of the poor are struggling to buy food because of shortages and high prices. That's it. Not complicated. I run on all the time on comments, but what should be two lines turned into 3 paragraphs with no line breaks.

In the 60s, there was an infamous incident where some prominent official addressing the food promises of the proposed Great Society opined, "Have you seen these people? Those n----rs are so fat they SHINE!"

I remember the history of how that came about. In 1968, just before Thanksgiving, welfare recipients staged a sit-in at the welfare office in Dallas and refused to leave. I can remember some gal saying "I hope when theys sits down to grease their stomachs, they remembers us!" It wasn't a local effort but a nationwide protest. In Houston, a group of welfare mothers descended on the offices with their children ages about 6-11 and the children stormed the office and assaulted the employees--it's called biting the hand that feeds you--and a couple of the employees received serious injury including broken ribs. In the temper of the times, no charges were filed. This resulted in the 1969 court decision that welfare is a right.

Nobody in this country is hungry or starving unless they choose to be.

If you have a problem with this statement you must be a working slob unaware that those who don't work are getting much more in free benefits than than what you are working for.

Is that a word play considering that Italians call Blacks "shines."

Not long ago, we had Freegans, usually dumb trust fund guys who raided dumpsters and ate like Queens.

Our homeless are Overweight, with blubbery arms so don't even start with the Beri-Beri bullshit.
